Euless Trinity starts pool play undefeated; Keller upsets Westlake

- The high school volleyball season began on Monday and now teams are getting in more valuable playing time with some of the premiere tournaments around the state going on.

Area teams are in Mansfield, Pearland, Hawaii and Carrollton from Aug. 11-13.

In Mansfield, the fifth annual MISD Sunrise Rotary hosts 32 teams across four of the five schools in the district at Mansfield, Summit, Timberview and Legacy.

At Summit, the host Jaguars took on Euless Trinity in the final game of the day, both looking to finish a perfect 3-0. The Trojans came out on top 25-21, 25-20. Games are best of three.

The Jaguars went 2-1 while Keller Fossil Ridge (1-2) and White Settlement Brewer (0-3) round out area teams at Summit.

At Mansfield, the Tigers finished 2-1 while Lake Ridge and Waxahachie finished 3-0. Richland, Legacy, Arlington Martin, Birdville, Arlington Seguin, Keller Central, Kennedale, Timberview, Arlington and Arlington Grace Prep are other area teams in the tourney.

A second round of pool games will be on Friday, scheduled for noon, while bracket play is set for Saturday.

Pearland

Keller highlighted Day 1 of the Adidas Texas Invitational with a 28-26, 25-22 upset of No. 6 Austin Westlake. The Indians finished the day 3-0. They started play on Thursday with the upset over Westlake, ranked No. 6 in the TGCA Class 6A poll before beating Klein Oak 20-25, 25-19, 25-18 and Brazoswood 25-18, 25-15.

Other area teams included Colleyville Heritage (2-1), Grapevine (1-2) and Granbury (0-3). Allen, Prosper, Coppell, Plano West and Flower Mound all went 3-0.

Hawaii

Over in paradise, Saginaw Boswell returned to the Ann Kang Invitational after a successful showing last season. Playing at Iolani High School in Honolulu, the Pioneers went 2-1 on Thursday with their only loss to Mira Costa, Calif., a team ranked No. 34 in the nation and No. 8 in California. Boswell won the first set 25-16 before dropping the final two 25-21, 15-9. Boswell went on to sweep Hawaii schools Moanalua and Iolani junior varsity.

Southlake Carroll, No. 2 in the state, began play late with a win over Hawaii Baptist Academy 25-18, 25-12. The Dragons also play California teams Sage Hill and Edison.

Carrollton

The Nike ASC Denton Ryan Classic will start on Friday at the Advantage Sports Complex. The two-day event will host area teams Aledo, Arlington Bowie, Azle, Byron Nelson, Burleson Centennial, Chisholm Trail, Haltom, Joshua, LD Bell, Justin Northwest, Fort Worth Paschal, Saginaw, Nolan Catholic and Fort Worth Eastern Hills. Also there will be Denton, Frisco, McKinney and Plano ISD schools, Lewisville, Grand Prairie and Godley. Games are set to tip at 9 a.m.
