Grapevine baseball reaches 5A regional final; Birdville softball goes to state
Grapevine scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning, giving the Mustangs the insurance needed to win Game 3 of the Class 5A Region I semifinal with a 6-1 victory over Canyon in Wichita Falls.
The win sets up an all-Metroplex regional final against District 6-5A neighbor Lake Dallas for a berth in the state tournament.
Boone Montgomery pitched a gem for Grapevine (34-6), scattering three hits, striking out four and allowing an unearned run in the complete game win.
James Wyche was for 2-for-4 and Kyle Flamm and Tanner Gibson each had two RBIs.
Montgomery helped his own cause with an RBI triple in the sixth.
Canyon (29-8) picked up a 6-5 win in Game 2 Saturday to force the deciding game, with Adam Alexander going 6 1/3 innings and giving up five runs and seven hits.
Montgomery and Connor Neuman each went 2 for 3 with an RBI.
Softball
Birdville 4, Canyon 3
Caitlin Young’s walk-off single in the 12th inning handed Birdville the sweep over Canyon and into the Class 5A state softball tournament this week in Austin.
Elena Garcia had a one-out single and came across for the game-winning run with two outs to send the Hawks (28-10) to their first state tournament appearance.
Freshman Grace Green (16-4), who struck out 13 batters on Friday in Game 1, started the game before leaving in the sixth for Calie Burris. Green would return in the 10th and finished with 14 strikeouts in 8 1/3 innings.
The Hawks jumped on Canyon early with two runs in the first on back-to-back RBI singles from Burris and Green with one out.
Canyon (30-8) took the lead with three runs in the top of the fifth. After back-to-back hits to begin the inning, the Eagles got RBI singles from Sloane Precure, Cambry Hedger and Makenzie Moore to take a 3-2 lead.
Birdville tied it in the bottom of the sixth when Burris got the green light on a 3-0 pitch and drove the ball over the right-field wall for her third home run of the postseason.
Baseball
Lake Dallas 3, Lubbock Cooper 1
Ty Behringer and Tyler Duffey combined to allow a run on six hits as the Falcons (26-10) swept Cooper to earn a berth in the Class 5A Region I final next week.
Logan Cowart was 1 for 3 with a two-run double to vault Lake Dallas.
The Pirates (31-4) couldn’t back up Austin Baxter’s effort on the mound. He gave up three earned runs and four hits and struck out five in the loss.
Godley 3-9, Sweetwater 1-1
Godley rallied from a Game 1 loss to win a doubleheader and advance to the Class 4A Region I final next week at Brock High School.
Brett Brown was 2 for 4 and Chase Lummus was 2 for 3 to lead the Wildcats in Game 2.
Brown was 1 for 2 with an RBI in Game 3 and Bobby Goodloe was 2 for 3 and two RBIs.
Brock 3, Farmersville 0
The Eagles (27-7) completed the sweep of the Class 3A Region II series behind a three-hit shutout from Seth Boleman.
Brock will face Bowie in the regional final next week.
Boleman was 1 for 2 and Travis Albritton was 2 for 2.
