Frisco hangs on to sweep Mansfield Legacy in softball playoffs
For the second straight night, Frisco and Mansfield Legacy came down to the final inning. But Legacy, unlike Frisco on Thursday, couldn’t pull off a walk-off victory.
The Raccoons won 2-1 to sweep the Class 5A Region II semifinal series Friday night in Coppell.
The Raccoons (29-1) advance to play the winner of North Forney and Lufkin in their first regional final since 2005.
Frisco took a 2-0 lead after back-to-back hits began the top of the sixth. Stephanie Clark drove in Valerie Bennett, and Emma Ortiz came across after an error.
Meagan Dake began the bottom of the seventh for Legacy (28-7) with a single past third. Erin Keating’s single to right put two on the corners with no outs.
Dake scored after a dropped pop-up in right to get within 2-1. Frisco had two straight dropped balls, but each time got the forceout at second.
Winning pitcher Maddie MacGrandle (29-1) struck out 12 for the second straight game and allowed five hits.
In other regional semifinal series:
Keller Timber Creek 6, Wolfforth Frenship 1
Avery Grimes hit a two-run home run and Mady Lohman drove in three runs as Timber Creek won Game 1 in a 6A series at Midwestern State.
Game 2 will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, with Game 3 to follow if necessary.
Lohman, an Oklahoma State commitment, gave the Falcons (26-9) the lead in the bottom of the third with a two-run double to center with two outs. Grimes, signed to UT Arlington, made it 4-0 with a home run to center in the fourth.
Lohman and Casey Akers added RBIs in the fifth, and Kylee Foster (23-9) allowed three hits and struck out four in five innings.
Keller 10, Lubbock Coronado 0
The Indians made quick work of Coronado in the opener of their 6A series at Abilene Christian with a run-rule win in five innings.
Keller (28-7) struck for four runs in each of the first two innings with three runs on two passed balls and an error. The Indians extended the lead to 5-0 in the second when Coronado shortstop Lea Garcia’s attempt to start a routine double play wound up down the right-field line.
Shelby Henderson added an RBI groundout before Kennedy Legg added a two-run double later in the inning to make Keller’s lead 8-0, and Kasey Simpson hit her third home run of the season in the fourth.
Kaylee Rogers (25-4) allowed three hits and struck out five in the complete game.
Game 2 will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Abilene.
Birdville 4, Canyon Randall 0
Calie Burris (12-6) allowed five hits in a complete game and hit a solo home run in the fourth to help the Hawks sweep a 5A series in Hermleigh.
Burris, who hit a home run in Game 1, gave Birdville (26-10) a 2-0 lead in the fourth and added another RBI in the fifth to extend the margin to 3-0. Grace Green and Elena Garcia also drove in runs.
The Hawks, who won 9-2 in Game 1 on Thursday, advance to their second regional final in program history (2012). They’ll face the winner of Burleson Centennial and Canyon.
Canyon 9, Burleson Centennial 8
Sarah Bell hit a three-run home run to lift the Eagles past the Spartans in Game 1 of their Class 5A Region I semifinal series in Wichita Falls.
Game 2 is slated for noon Saturday in Wichita Falls.
Centennial (29-4) jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first but Canyon (25-5) stormed back in the bottom of the fourth, scoring six runs on three hits to take a 6-2 lead.
In the top of the fifth, Centennial’s Bailey White belted a grand slam over the left-field fence to tie the game 6-6.
Trailing 9-6 in the seventh, the Spartans scored runs on a three-base error to right field and a double by Marley Eller.
Kennedale 8, Snyder 4
In a rematch of last year’s regional final, the Wildcats took Game 1 in Henrietta of their 4A series. Game 2 will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Henrietta.
Kennedale (20-16) went ahead 4-2 in the first after trailing 2-0 on a bases-clearing double from Elizabeth Schiele.
The Wildcats added three runs in the fifth with a two-run double from starting pitcher Megan Calhoun and an RBI single from Lexi Neifert.
Calhoun, a freshman, struck out five batters and allowed eight hits in the complete-game victory.
Brock 8, Redwater 3
The Eagles (33-3) rallied to scored seven runs in the top of the seventh to take Game 1 of their Class 3A Region II semifinal series at Plano East.
Game 2 will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Plano East.
Ashtyn McAda started the rally with a single to right. Cara Tolar tied the game 3-3 with a two-run home run. Mattye Tyler gave Brock the 5-3 lead with her own two-run shot and Sydney Snow, Bailey Wagner and Bailey Ray had RBI hits.
