Keller stops Hebron in Game 1 of regional baseball quarterfinals

Keller freshman Mikey Brinton drove in what proved to be the winning run as the Indians defeated Hebron 6-1 on Thursday in Game 1 of a Class 6A Region I quarterfinal series at Dallas Baptist.

Both teams are back at DBU at 4:30 p.m. Friday for Game 2.

Hebron scratched out a run in the second inning and held the 1-0 lead through 4 1/2 innings before Keller rallied.

Brady Lindsly started the rally with a two-out single, then scored on a throwing error after Kyle Rich singled to center field.

Brinton worked the count to 1-1 before driving a looping single into right field, scoring Rich from second base to make it 2-1.

Keller (25-8-2) scored two more in the inning on Matt Cavanaugh’s single and Hunter Seay’s double.

The Indians added two insurance runs in the sixth inning.

Zane Wilkinson pitched 3 2/3 innings for Keller, giving up one run and three hits before coach Rob Strampe gave the ball to Stephen Norrell and Seay to finish the game.

Micah Lloyd was 2-for-3 with a run scored for Hebron (26-7).

Grapevine 7, Wichita Falls Rider 6: In Bowie, the Mustangs (28-4-2) loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with no outs and scored three runs to rally for a second time in Game 1 of the Class 5A regional quarterfinal series.

Starting pitcher Kyle Flamm, charged with four of Rider’s runs, watched a 4-1 lead evaporate in the top of the seventh. The Raiders’ Koby Hott belted a grand slam to make it 6-4.

Ty Jones had a two-run single as Grapevine erased a 1-0 deficit in the bottom of the fifth, scoring James Wyche and Boone Montgomery.

Conner Neuman scored on a throwing error to make it 3-1.

Jones then stole second and scored when Flamm singled to center field.

Softball

Frisco 2, Mansfield Legacy 1 (8): In Highland Park, Frisco (28-1) scored a walk-off victory in Game 1 of a Class 5A Region II semifinal series.

Frisco starting pitcher Maddie MacGrandle led off the bottom of the eighth with a single to center. Pinch runner MJ Johnson advanced to second on a single from Stephanie Clark.

Taylor Trosclair hit a grounder to third, but Legacy (28-6) committed a throwing error to second, sending the ball to right center. Johnson stumbled running to home but still managed to crawl to the plate for the win.

Game 2 is at 7 p.m. Friday at Coppell Middle School.

MacGrandle (28-1) allowed three hits and struck out 12 for the Raccoons. Legacy’s Sophie Hannabas (14-3) struck out eight and both runs were unearned.

Birdville 9, Canyon Randall 2: In Hermleigh, Calie Burris hit a three-run home run in the first and the Hawks (25-10) beat the Eagles (26-13) in Game 1 of a 5A Region I semifinal series.

Game 2 will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Hermleigh.

Freshman Grace Green, an Oregon commitment, allowed just one hit and struck out 10 in a complete game.

RBI doubles from Maygan Paul and Green in the third gave Birdville a 5-0 lead.

Randall got within 5-2 before Birdville scored four in the fifth. Paul singled in a run and Gianna Valforte hit a two-run double for the 9-2 margin.
