Southlake Carroll’s Reed Brown breaks 29-year-old UIL state track record
Southlake Carroll junior Reed Brown broke a 29-year-old state record Friday, winning the Class 6 A 3,200 meters in 8 minutes, 50.43 seconds at the UIL State Track and Field Meet at Mike A. Myers Stadium at the University of Texas.
Brown’s time beat the previous mark of 8:52.34 by Eric Henry of Conroe McCullough in 1987. Brown’s time was also the third fastest time in the nation this season, but it didn’t come easily.
Brown didn’t panic when Samuel Worley of New Braunfels Canyon passed him with 200 meters left in the race. He stuck to his plan and initiated a final burst and passed Worley down the stretch. Worley also broke the previous state record, finishing in 8:51.44.
“I was trying to save as much as possible for that last 100,” Brown said. “I knew I’d need it.”
Carroll distance coach Justin Leonard was impressed.
“It’s pretty incredible what he was able to do today,” Leonard said. “It’s really nice those kids were able to push each other in battle like they did today.”
Cougars take silver in team standings
McKinney North supplanted Arlington Seguin as the 5A girls team champions, scoring 74 points. Seguin was second with 46 and Mansfield Lake Ridge was third with 42.
Lake Ridge is in only its fourth year of existence, but the school was a near-perfect 6-for-7 in winning medals at state this season. This included a pair of gold medals by freshman Jasmine Moore in the triple jump Thursday and long jump Friday with her leap of 19 feet, 10 inches.
Joining Brown and Moore as area athletes winning gold medals Friday were senior Tonea Marshall of Arlington Seguin in the 5A girls 100 hurdles, Saginaw Boswell junior Jalen Seals in the 5A boys long jump, senior Zoe Broadway of Joshua in the 5A girls discus, Trophy Club Nelson senior Leilyn Miles in the 6A girls shot put, and the Seguin girls 800 relay.
Marshall continued her dominance in the 100 hurdles, winning the event for a second consecutive year. She posted a Class 5A-record time of 13.30.
In addition, Marshall ran the third leg of the winning 800 relay that finished in 1:36.53. She was joined by seniors Aubrey Ridgeway and Lateria Gooding and junior Ja’Maya Gill. Marshall, Ridgeway and Gooding were also on the 800 relay that won state last year.
Seals’ long jump of 24-11 is the fifth-best in the nation this season. It comes on the heels of his silver medal Friday in the triple jump.
Miles had a winning throw of 45-7. She won the event on her final throw by almost two feet.
Broadway’s winning throw of 141 feet came a year after a downpour got the best of her last year in the same event.
“I’ve been preparing for this day ever since last year,” Broadwau said. “I’m actually more happy for my coaches [coach Craig Bethell, throwing coach Paul Pehrson]. Now I get to say, ‘I’m your state champ.’ ”
