Keller knocks off Plano West in Game 1 on late home run
Keller catcher Shelby Henderson hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to rally the Indians to a 4-2 win against Plano West in Game 1 of a Class 6A regional quarterfinal series Thursday night at Prosper High School.
Keller (26-6) scored four times in the sixth to erase a 1-0 deficit. Freshman Caraline Woodall added an RBI in the inning.
Kaylee Rogers (23-3) threw the complete game, allowing just three hits and striking out six.
Mansfield 2, Keller Timber Creek 1: Tigers sophomore Paxton Scheurer won the pitcher’s duel against Falcons senior Kylee Foster in Game 1 of a 6A Region I quarterfinal series.
Payton Simpkins hit her fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead in the second inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, Timber Creek got within one after Caitlyn Curlee drew an RBI walk.
Scheurer (25-5) allowed five hits and struck out eight for Mansfield (26-6). Foster (20-9) allowed seven hits and struck out three for Timber Creek (23-9).
Birdville 7, Aledo 1: After falling behind to defending 5A state champion Aledo in the top of the third inning, the Hawks (23-9) scored seven unanswered runs to take Game 1 of the regional quarterfinal series at Haslet Eaton High School.
Birdville’s Emily Powell tripled home left fielder Payton Walker to tie the game 1-1 with nobody out in the bottom of the third. Catcher Makenna Moore brought Powell home with an infield single two batters later. Once the Hawks had the lead, Birdville’s pitching tandem of Grace Green and Callie Burris didn’t allow Aledo (20-11) another hit.
Birdville added four more in the fourth inning to put the game out of reach. Aledo center fielder Kadyn Kirkpatrick drove in third baseman Bailee Whitener with a two-out single for the Bearcats’ only run.
“Any time you can beat Aledo it’s a huge win,” Birdville coach John Love said. “I’ll take being one ahead anytime.”
San Antonio Incarnate Word 10, Nolan Catholic 0: The Vikings’ season came to an end after a 10-0 loss in the TAPPS 5A state semifinals on Thursday in Sweeny. It was the program's first state tournament appearance since 2010. The Vikings finish 21-12.
