Softball roundup: Grand slam helps Mansfield stun Plano

Morgan Rios’ grand slam highlighted a six-run sixth inning as the Mansfield Tigers rallied to stun Plano 7-5 and sweep their Class 6A Region I area-round series at Colleyville Heritage.

Mansfield (25-6) meets Keller Timber Creek in its first regional quarterfinal since 2010.

The Tigers, who won 1-0 in Game 1, tied saw Plano take a 5-1 lead after five innings of Game 2, setting the stage for Rios’ team-leading 10th home run of the season.

Kaitlin Richards and Rasheda Townsend followed with the game-winning RBIs.

Keller Timber Creek 5 Hurst Bell 1

For the second night in a row, Vanessa Alonzo drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the fourth and the Falcons won Game 2 to sweep the 6A area-round series

Bell’s Randi Castillo singled to tie the game 1-1 in the third. A half inning later, Madie Green reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second and scored on Alonzo’s hit to right.

Avery Grimes had a triple, double and an RBI, and Caitlyn Curlee went 3-for-3 with an RBI.

Timber Creek (23-8) advances to its first regional quarterfinal.

Mansfield Legacy 7 Mount Pleasant 5

Legacy career home run leader Reagan Wright added to her total with two home runs to win Game 2 and sweep the 5A series in Lindale.

Wright hit a two-run home run in the first and Erin Keating drove in Meagan Dake to give Legacy (26-4) a 3-0 lead.

Courtney Taylor singled in a run in the second and Wright’s solo shot in the fifth gave her 33 for her career to push the lead to 5-1. Ta’Lyn Moody and Sophie Hannabas also drove in runs.

Aledo 1 Azle 0

Hannah Andrews (14-8) drove in the winning run with an RBI single to right in the top of the eighth and the Bearcats swept the 5A series at Saginaw Chisholm Trail.

Aledo (20-10), which has won back-to-back state titles, has eliminated Azle in the postseason in three consecutive years.

The Bearcats will face Birdville, which swept Joshua.

Gianna Valforte scored the walk-off run in the bottom of the eighth and the Hawks swept their 5A series.

The Hawks (22-9) advance to their fifth regional quarterfinal in the past seven years.

Joshua took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Miranda Pruitt hit her 12th home run of the season.

Birdville’s Elena Garcia tied it in the sixth with a home run. Grace Green (11-3) struck out 12 and allowed five hits in a complete game.

Kennedale 10 Mineral Wells 8

Trailing 2-1 in the third, the Wildcats (17-16) scored six times with an RBI double by Elizabeth Schiele and a three-run homer by Alyssa Bradberry to sweep the 4A series at Haslet Eaton. Kennedale advances to face Stephenville.
