Saginaw Boswell sweeps Grapevine for first playoff series win since 2007
Saginaw Boswell broke open a 1-1 tie with six runs in the top of the fourth to defeat Grapevine 16-4 in Game 2, sweeping their Class 5A bi-district softball series.
Boswell (17-16) wins its first playoff series since 2007 and meets Burleson, which beat Fort Worth South Hills 4-1 in a one-game playoff.
After loading the bases, Peyton Robinson beat out a bunt attempt to give the Pioneers a 2-1 lead. Starting pitcher Brittany Sharp put one up the middle for the 4-1 lead.
Paige Horton capped off the inning with a two-run single to extend the lead to 7-1. Sharp improved to 8-8 on the season by throwing a complete game.
Horton and Amaiah Garcia each drove in three runs, while Peyton Robinson finished 3 of 6 with two RBIs. Gracelyn Rosales was 3 of 5 with two RBIs.
Heather Haggard led Grapevine (18-11) off with a home run to center in the first, her third of the season.
Abilene 2 , Paschal 1
Sophomore pitcher Lydia Vidales put in six strong innings, striking out eight batters, but it wasn’t enough as the Eagles came away with the Game 1 victory in a 6A best-of-three series.
The Panthers (23-5) had a rally in the fifth when Bridgette Krippel singled in their only run with no outs, but Abilene’s Gabby Ortega retired the next three batters.
Midlothian 10, Coll. Heritage 6
Starting pitcher Emily Noah helped earn herself a win by blasting a two-run double off the wall in center field in the top of the ninth inning to complete a sweep in this 6A bi-distrct series.
Noah finished with three RBI, including one in the fourth inning when Midlothian (16-11) erupted for six runs to take command of the game.
Heritage (12-15) had taken a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a Maggie Black two-run homer and tied the game in the fifth on Sarah Grace Parks’ RBI fielder’s choice. Midlothian finished with 15 hits.
Azle 25, FW Carter-Riverside 0
Brooke Ledbetter allowed one run, and Miranda Longbrake and Sam Bradley each hit home runs as the Hornets swept their 5A bi-district series.
Azle (28-6) next meets Aledo, which swept Fort Worth North Side 17-2 and 14-0. Aledo, which has won two-straight state titles, knocked out Azle in the regional final both years.
Bradley, who threw a no-hitter and hit a home run in Game 1 on Thursday, hit a grand slam in the first inning on Friday.
