Oh brother, where art thou?
Right next to each other, running the 400-meter dash for the Arlington Seguin track team.
Senior twins Keylon and Keanon Dennis are close, and that includes their times in an event that’s been in their family for decades.
Keylon ranks first in Class 5A Region I with a time of 48.30 seconds, while Keanon is third at 48.52.
And both have their sights set on settling the showdown in Austin at the UIL State Track and Field Meet in May.
“If we both get to state in the 400, the winner will have bragging rights until college,” Keanon said with a chuckle.
In fact, they want to run at the same college, and several are giving them looks. Keanon said their dad ran the 400 in college at Angelo State in the late 1990s, which was their inspiration.
Last season they competed at state as part of a relay. This season they would love to compete against each other on the track at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
“You don’t find that opportunity to go to state in general, and to be able to do it with your brother is really special,” said Keylon, who has been running alongside Keanon since seventh grade.
Seguin coach Michael Murphy said the experience from last season, notably the disappointment of not finishing higher at state — the Cougars’ 4x400 placed seventh — has left them eager for redemption.
“They have a chip on their shoulder,” Murphy said. “When a kid gets a chance to run down there, it’s a different atmosphere. But once you get that experience, and you know inside that you can handle it, you can’t wait to go back.”
Keanon said reaching state last season did build their confidence. They know they are among the best in Texas.
“I feel like this year I want to go back and get in the history books,” Keanon said.
Ditto for Keylon, with an addendum.
“I’m going to wish the best for him,” he said, adding with a laugh, “But I’m trying to get first place.”
Texas Relays time
The University of Texas in Austin will host the 89th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays this week, and the area will again be well represented, with nearly 200 competing Friday and Saturday.
Based on the early release of performance lists, the school with the most qualifiers is Arlington Bowie with 15, followed by Arlington Martin and Mansfield Lake Ridge with 13 each.
Arlington Seguin and Southlake Carroll each had a dozen listed, and Mansfield Summit listed 11.
Remembering a coach
Longtime Burleson track coach Keith Gilbert, who died of cancer 10 years ago, will be remembered again Friday when the school hosts the Keith Gilbert Relays.
“He had a bigger than life personality and was never at a loss for words,” Burleson coach Steve Goben said.
“Keith meant a lot to this school and it’s athletic program, and when he passed students and community members showed up pay their respects by the hundreds.
“His girls track teams were always some of the finest in the area and produced many regional and state qualifiers.”
The booster club honors the coach’s memory each year with a Gilbert’s Gridiron Heroes Scholarship to a graduating senior.
The meet was renamed in his honor in 2008.
