Aledo’s Cheyenne Knight takes individual 4A golf state title
Aledo’s Cheyenne Knight won the UIL Classs 4A state championship Tuesday, shooting 70 on the second day for a 36-hole score of 144 at the University of Texas Golf Club in Austin.
“Cheyenne played awesome,” Aledo coach Greg Nelson said. “She had a great round. She had four birdies and a couple of bogeys, but the course was playing really tough. There was about a 20 to 25 mph north wind, so her 2-under performance was pretty incredible, really. She deserves everything she’s got because she is a hard-working young lady.”
Knight, a junior, said that it has not really set in yet that she is the 4A state champion and that things are still kind of a blur for her.
“I played pretty solid today,” Knight said on Tuesday. “On my front nine, I had seven pars and I birdied eight and nine, so that kind of gave me some momentum and a cushion going into the back nine. On my last hole, I made a 35-footer for birdie, so it was a good way to end.”
Knight has already committed to the University of Alabama.
The Aledo girls team was edged out for third place overall with a score of 662, just one stroke back of Humble Kingwood.
Carroll boys 2nd
The Southlake Carroll Black team shot a 284 Tuesday at Onion Creek Golf Club, finishing second at 579 while the Green team shot a 306 to finish fourth at 608.
“It was a big effort,” coach Matt Glenn said. “We made a run at it, for sure. We had some really good scores today, and they pushed it. I am really proud of them.”
Carroll Black was four strokes back of first-place Austin Westlake. Carroll Black’s Mason Greenberg (140) finished third, while teammate Colin Hamilton (142) finished fifth.
On the girls side, Keller’s Claire Carlin shot an 84 on Tuesday to finish with a two-day total of 160, and coach Chris Ball said he was pleased with his senior’s effort.
“I really hope she just enjoyed competing,” Ball said. “She started playing golf the summer before her freshman year of high school, so to get to a state tournament her senior year is an amazing accomplishment.”
The Carroll girls finished seventh overall at the state tournament with a score of 312 on Tuesday.
The Grapevine girls made the state tournament as a team for the first time in school history and improved 10 strokes, from a 343 to 333, from the first round to the second round.
“I am glad they got this experience and especially the seniors,” coach Bryan Humphreys said. “It was a phenomenal season for our girls.”
Briefly
Reband went from 1-under to 4-over in three holes, but coach Pat McHargue said he could not be more proud.
“If he was going for fourth, that would have been disappointing,” McHargue said. “He was trying to win, and that is his mentality. He doesn’t play for fourth place or sixth place. He plays to win.
“You can’t win this tournament on one hole, but you can certainly hurt your chances on one hole. He’ll be back next year. They’ll get used to seeing his name on the leader board next season.”
