State soccer: Hebron girls overcome Katy Cinco Ranch

Overcoming two shots that hit the crossbar and a goal that was disallowed, Hebron beat Katy Cinco Ranch 3-1 in a Class 5A girls game Thursday at the UIL state soccer tournament in Georgetown.

The Hawks’ Laura Scholz broke the tie in the 69th minute on a direct kick. Stefani Doyle added an insurance goal about three minutes later and Hebron (23-2-2) advanced to the final against Plano West.

The final will be played at 11 a.m. Saturday at Birkelbach Field.

Hebron outshot the Cougars 6-2 in the first half, but Cinco Ranch (21-2-3) led 1-0 after Haley Cole headed home a corner kick in the 31st minute.

“It’s very frustrating, but we kept our heads high and we knew we could win this game to go to the finals,” Scholz said. “We knew in the second half we were going to come out strong and win this game.”

Lauren Frank tied the game on a corner kick by Alanna Castenada in the 51st minute, followed by Scholz’s goal from about 20 yards out.

• Plano West 3, San Antonio Reagan 0: Abby Grace Cooper scored her third game-winning goal in the past four games to lead the Wolves (20-2-4) past the Rattlers (21-2-3) in 5A semifinal action.

Cooper, a freshman who became a starter in district play, used a deft touch and left-footed cross to score in the 20th minute, and Rachel Grout and sophomore Lakyn Pope added goals in the final five minutes of play.

Plano West has won the past two 5A titles.

The Wolves graduated five all-tournament state playoffs from last year, but coach Allie Rogosheske is back with a cross-section of underclass starters.

“AG [Cooper] always played, but just started finding her confidence with the other players,” Rogosheske said. “She sees things others don’t. She makes everyone else better.”

Boys

• Coppell 1, McKinney Boyd 0: A header by Justin Todd in the second half was enough for the Cowboys (22-1-2) to down the Broncos (15-5-6) in a 5A semifinal.

Coppell, the defending 5A champions, meets Fort Bend Clements at 1 p.m. Saturday.

• Fort Bend Clements 3, Brownsville Lopez 2: Early second-half goals by Gabe Costa and Kevin Matthews, and the final score by Trinidad Luna in the 75th minute, were enough as the Rangers (22-2-3) held off the Lobos (22-3-1).
