NBA star presented Fort Worth-area’s Grady Emerson with this national award
The recognition and honors for Fort Worth Christian standout shortstop Grady Emerson keep rolling in.
Emerson, who was selected with the No. 2 overall pick in Saturday’s MLB draft, was awarded with Gatorade’s Best Player of the Year honors at the ESPYS in New York City Wednesday. Boston Celtics All-Star and NBA champion Jayson Tatum presented it live on stage.
“Being awarded Gatorade Best Male Player of the Year is something I’ve only dreamed about,” Emerson said via press release. “The athletes who have come before me are the best of all time, so it’s crazy to now be a part of this legacy. Thank you to Gatorade for the recognition and for creating this once-in-a-lifetime experience to celebrate all the hard work it took for us to get here.”
The award covers all sports, making it Gatorade’s top honor. Emerson already received Texas’ Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year and the Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year honors.
The recognitions go beyond athletics, highlighting athletes for academic excellence and community impact. According to Gatorade, Emerson volunteered at The North Texas Food Bank and Mission Arlington, led youth baseball training sessions and delivered home care services during the holiday season while maintaining an A average in the classroom.
Gatorade’s Best Player of the Year has been awarded to stars such as Paige Bueckers, Bobby Witt Jr., Morgan Brian, Cooper Flagg, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and more.
“Gatorade Player of the Year celebrates the nation’s most outstanding young athletes who embody excellence both on and off the field,” said Senior Director of Gatorade Brand Marketing Jennifer Schmit via press release. “This year’s winners are no exception – they represent the next generation of leaders who will pave the future of sport. We’re proud to recognize their incredible accomplishments and support them as they reach the next level in their careers. Grady and Maddie are more than ready to carry this legacy forward and continue inspiring athletes everywhere to pursue greatness.”
Emerson led Fort Worth Christian to the TAPPS Division II state championship game, hitting .508 with 56 RBIs and eight home runs. He was named the Star-Telegram’s Offensive Player of the Year.
His long list of accolades includes being the nation’s consensus top prep prospect and being named a semifinalist for the 2026 Golden Spikes Award, which is given to the top amateur athlete in baseball. Emerson and Witt Jr. are the only two high school athletes to be named semifinalists in the award’s history.
Emerson transferred from Argyle to Fort Worth Christian ahead of his senior season to play for Cardinal head coach and Texas Rangers’ legend Rusty Greer.
