With first state title win, longtime Keller head coach gets fairytale ending

Before Keller players were awarded the Class 6A Division I state championship after a 2-1 victory over Austin Lake Travis Saturday at Dell Diamond, two players said, “Give the title to coach.”

That’s Rob Stramp, 72, who retired with a fairytale ending by leading the Indians and Keller ISD to their first state title. He started coaching at Keller High School in 1998 and entered the championship game knowing the 2026 season would be his last.

“I can’t describe how proud I am of the kids,” Stramp said. “They’re so competitive, and they don’t blink. They just keep playing, and I’m really proud to be their coach.”

It’s not uncommon to see successful head coaches overstay their welcome. To stay on the sidelines long enough to see the game evolve and playoff odds crumble while telling themselves, “Just one more year.”

But that wasn’t the case for Stramp, who led the Indians to new heights in the tail end of his career. Keller made the 2021 title game and, in 2026, fulfilled its longtime mantra: “Win Texas.”

“It’s a goal, but this wasn’t going to define our program,” Stramp said of the title. “Whether or not we won today or another time, but it’s a great reward for a bunch of guys who year-after-year-after-year have put the work in and had the great attitude.”

Despite a title eluding the Indians for decades, Keller has consistently been a threat under Stramp, who led the program to the playoffs in every year since the 2002 season. He has more than 750 wins in his career.

“It feels unbelievable to be able to finally get it done for coach (Rob) Stramp in his last game,” said Keller senior Cole Koeninger, the Championship MVP. “He deserves it more than anyone. He’s been here so long and has been so close, that to finally get it for him is really special.”

He’s developed multiple draft prospects including Koeninger, a Tennessee signee, Los Angeles Dodgers two-time All-Star and three-time World Series Champion Max Muncy and Athletics catcher Shea Langeliers. Keller also has several players in the minor leagues.

“He has been monumental in my development as a person and as a baseball player,” Koeninger said. “And I can’t say enough great things about him.”

Stramp has had coaching stints at TCU, Irving Nimitz, Texarkana Pleasant Grove and Carrollton Turner. He started at TCU in 1988, beginning a coaching career that would span nearly four decades.

He played at Irving MacArthur before winning a National Championship with the University of Texas in 1975.

“Coach Stramp has done so much,” Keller senior Logan Brown said. “He is a great guy off the field. A man of faith. I think that’s what led our team, honestly. We were all on the same page mentally. He led a brotherhood, and you couldn’t ask for anything else.”

Multiple Keller players said his coaching went beyond the game, and credited him for establishing a culture of success at Keller. His impact was especially evident for senior Maximus Segura, who said he saved his career.

“He took a chance on me” Segura said. “My sophomore year, I wasn’t doing well at tryouts. But he saw something in me. It’s amazing, [winning the title] for him in his final year.”

Ahead of the game, before passing of the last lineup card of his career, Stramp sat in the dugout as he team warmed up. He said he was contemplating the moment.

“Even before the game, it was kind of surreal,” Stramp said. “One game for everything, it’s kind of hard to wrap your head around, and so I was trying to do that.”

Keller assistant Jared Stafford, a former Dallas Baptist University pitcher and a Keller class of 2007 alum, is set to take over the program and has been coaching under Stramp since 2012.

“He’s been with me for 15 years, and kind of the right-hand man, and he’s done an incredible job,” Stramp said of his former player. “So, I can’t think of anybody else who should take the torch but him.”

Stafford said he is “extremely blessed and grateful” for the opportunity and added that Stramp has meant a “tremendous amount” to him.

“He’s such a great mentor,” Stafford said. “He has done such a great job showing me all sides of coaching. Beyond the skills of hitting and pitching — What it means to develop a team and develop team chemistry and help these guys along. ... It’s been so much fun.

“I’m going to miss the guy so much but me and him will be golfing a lot, so I’ll get to see him, and I know he’ll try to stay connected to the program.”
