The Keller baseball team’s quest to “win Texas” hit a road bump on Thursday at Horner Ballpark on the campus of Dallas Baptist University.

The Indians played shaky defense early and couldn’t recover as Rockwall took Game 1 of the Class 6A Division I state semifinal series 5-2. Game 2 is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Friday back at Dallas Baptist University with a Game 3, if necessary, scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Saturday at DBU.

Keller (37-4-2) had a disastrous second inning as Rockwall came up with three unearned runs on two hits against Indians’ starter Logan Brown, a University of Houston signee. A ground ball to third base to leadoff the inning by Yellowjacket third baseman Brent Celis was fielded, but the throw across short hopped to first where Keller’s Trey Baugus was unable to dig it out.

A.J. Newby followed with a soft lined single to center to move pinch runner Cailan Zollicoffer to third. Reid Overstreet followed with a chopper to second base that went off the glove of Max Segura for another error to score Zollicoffer.

Newby scored on a ground out to short by Zach Barnes and Brock Shouse drove Overstreet home with a lined single to center to make it 3-0. Brown pitched well enough to win allowing five runs with just one being earned in four-plus innings scattering five hits with one walk and one strikeout.

Keller rallied for two runs in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 3-2. Cole Koeninger blooped a one-out double to center that was followed by walks to Brock Burkett and Max Segura with cleanup hitter Brown at the plate.

A wild pick off throw by the catcher to third base rolled into left field allowing Koeninger and Burkett to score. But that was all the Indians could muster as Brown struck out and Jayden Moeller flew out to center.

Rockwall (27-16-3) got the two runs back in the bottom of the fifth to go up 5-2 and Yellowjackets’ starter Hudson Holt, a University of Texas commit, made it stand up. Keller got a base runner in each of the sixth and seventh innings, but never really threatened.

Holt, a junior, finished the game allowing two runs, both unearned, on six hits with four strikeouts and three walks in six and one-third innings of work.
