For the first time in program history, White Settlement Brewer is heading to the UIL Texas high school softball Class 5A Division II state championship.

The Bears finished a sweep of Hallsville in the state semifinals Saturday, seizing a 6-2 Game 2 win at Athens High School. In Game 1, the Bears won 8-2.

Brewer (27-9) will face Lake Creek (38-1) in the Class 5A Division II state championship game at 7 p.m. Friday at Red & Charline McCombs Field at the University of Texas in Austin.

It’ll be the first time Brewer High School and White Settlement ISD are represented in a softball state final. It’ll also be the first time a school located with Fort Worth city limits makes an appearance.

Lake Creek is MaxPreps’ No. 2-ranked squad nationwide and No. 1 in Texas. The Lions swept Liberty Hill in the state semifinals. Brewer is currently unranked.

Game 2 saw sophomore Sylver Orebaugh thrive in the circle, allowing two earned runs in 6 1/3 innings. She conceded nine hits and registered no strikeouts, yet the Brewer defense limited the damage with effective play.

Sophomore Cozette Tyson came in with one out in the bottom of the seventh and ended the series by forcing consecutive groundouts.

Offensively, Haylie Jimenez was a driving force. She got Brewer on the board with a first inning RBI double and, after an Avery Welch two run home run in the third inning, broke open the game in the fifth inning with a three run home run.
