Arlington ISD promotes defensive coordinator to head football coach at Lamar
Arlington ISD promoted defensvie coordinator Zach Najarro to be Lamar High School’s next head football coach, Najarro announced Friday.
“Honored and excited to officially be named the Head Football Coach at Lamar High School,” Najarro wrote on X. “Lamar is a special place with a proud tradition and outstanding young men ready to achieve great things. The future of Viking Football is bright.”
Najarro replaces Billy Skinner, who departed to become Grapevine-Colleyville ISD’s executive director of athletics. After his departure, Skinner told the Star-Telegram he hoped Najarro would be his replacement. He also said Lamar is set up for success in 2026 with a flurry of returning experienced players.
Lamar made the playoffs in 2025 for the first time since 2019. Najarro will have the opportunity to keep building in a new era that will include many challenges.
Arlington Bowie has been the standout Arlington ISD Class 6A squad with consecutive district championships. The 2026 UIL realignment also pits 12-time state champion Aledo against Arlington ISD squads as it rises to Class 6A. Granbury and Weatherford are also in the district.
