Softball regional finals: Brewer, Byron Nelson seize big wins, more from area
The UIL Texas high school softball regional finals are here, and several Fort Worth-area teams competed Thursday.
Brewer’s power hitting works wonders against Wylie
White Settlement Brewer (28-8), in game one of a Class 5A Division II regional semifinal series, picked up an 8-4 win over Wylie (24-14) at Stephenville High School.
The game was tied at 4 in the fifth inning when Brewer broke away with a four-run frame. Infielder Avery Welch had a standout performance, hitting two home runs en route to driving in four runs on the day.
Ava Pena and Charisma Johnson also hit home runs in the game, and seven Brewer athletes registered a hit in the contest.
Cozette Tyson pitched a complete game, conceding seven hits and four earned runs. After allowing two runs in the third inning, she kept Wylie scoreless the rest of the game.
Brewer is one win away from appearing in its first state semifinal in program history.
Byron Nelson topples Guyer, evens series
Byron Nelson defeated Denton Guyer 2-1 to even the two squads’ Class 6A Division II regional final series at Byron Nelson High School. After Guyer’s Finley Montgomery tossed a no-hitter on Wednesday, Byron Nelson sophomore Meredith Hambric stepped up and powered her team to victory in another pitchers’ duel.
Hambric, in a complete game, allowed five hits and did not concede an earned run due to an error giving Guyer (35-3) its sole score in the third inning. She struck out six, carrying the Bobcats to victory facing elimination.
Byron Nelson (37-6-1) tied the game in the fourth inning with McKenna Cleary scoring on a wild pitch. The biggest swing of the night came in the fifth inning, when Courtney Julian hit a solo home run off Montgomery, who had been dominant to that point.
As a team, Byron Nelson tallied four hits off Montgomery, a Notre Dame signee, but it was enough to secure a narrow victory. A deciding game three of the series is slated for 7 p.m. Friday at Coppell Athletic Complex.
Brock cruises past Amarillo Randall
Brock softball held a 3-1 lead over Amarillo Randall in the sixth inning at Abilene Christian University when the bats came alive.
The Brock Eagles scored six runs in the frame to build a 9-1 lead they maintained the rest of the way in game one of a Class 4A Division II regional semifinal series. Kathryn Utley led the way offensively, tallying two hits and a team-high three RBIs.
Jayci Smith was another key contributor with a team high three hits an RBI and a walk. From the circle, Ali Coleman was dominant with no earned runs in a complete game. She conceded two hits, no walks and had three strikeouts.
