Welcome to the high school softball edition of the Fastball, a Star-Telegram series highlighting Fort Worth-area teams. The UIL regional semifinals are in full swing so check out coverage and results.

Aledo rolls into regional final; sweeps past Monterey

After a close 3-1 win in Game 1 on Thursday, the Aledo bats erupted for a 17-1, 5-inning win over Lubbock Monterey in Game 2 on Friday to sweep the Plainsmen in their Class 5A Division I regional semifinal series held at Holliday High School.

Aledo (28-10) will face Abilene (27-11-1) in the Region I final next week after the Eagles stunned North Richland Hills Richland with a double-header sweep on Friday. Abilene lost 1-0 in Game 1, but rallied for 3-0, and 9-1 wins on Friday.

Aledo led 4-0 after 2 innings then put up 7 more in the third to pull away from Monterey (31-7-1). Rylee Marx got things rolling in the inning with a leadoff homer to left and Tempe Perry (single) and Kyleigh Pawlak (double) added hits that drove in 2 runs each in the frame.

Perry got the win in the circle allowing 1 earned run while scattering 3 hits. Perry went 2 for 5 at the plate with 2 runs scored and 3 RBI and Pawlak (2 for 4, 3 RBI) and Breleigh Mayer (2 for 3, 2 HR, 2 runs, 5 RBI) had multiple hits as well for the Bearcats.

Mayer had a 2-run homer in the second inning and a 3-run shot in the fifth.

In Game 1 on Thursday, Mayer led off the fifth with a homer to left that gave Aledo a 3-1 lead after Kayleigh Martin gave the Bearcats a 2-0 lead in the second with a 2-run shot. Perry went the distance at pitcher, allowing an unearned run on 8 hits with 4 strikeouts.

Byron Nelson sweeps Marcus, Guyer up next

Trophy Club Byron Nelson rode an 8-run third inning to a 15-3 win over Flower Mound Marcus in Game 2 on Friday at Marcus High School to sweep the Class 6A Division II series

Byron Nelson (36-5-1) moves on the regional final and will face Denton Guyer (34-2) which downed Keller 4-1 and 7-5. Marcus’ season ends at 21-14.

Kaylee Vien, Brooklyn Hanson, Elle Dearing and Bryson Farco all homered for the Bobcats. Farco went 3 for 4 at the dish with 5 RBI and 2 runs scored. Mackenzie Nelson (2 runs, 5 RBI), McKenna Cleary, Dearing (2 runs, 4 RBI), Hanson (2 runs, 2 RBI), Courtney Julian and Marley Hall all had 2 hits each in Byron’s 16-hit onslaught.

Dearing’s 1-out, grand slam home run was the big blow in the third inning. Meredith Hambric allowed 3 earned runs on 5 hits in 6 innings with 5 strikeouts for the Bobcats.

Game 1 on Thursday at Byron Nelson High School was a pitchers duel won by the Bobcats 3-2. Hambric was in the circle and allowed 2 runs, none earned, while scattering 7 hits with 8 stikeouts and no walks.

Marcus tied the game at 2 in the top of the fifth, but after a leadoff triple in the sixth by Hanson, the senior scored on a double-play grounder to second base.

Brock runs roughshod over Canyon to advance

Brock broke open a close game with 12 runs in the fourth inning to run rule Canyon 16-2 in 5 innings in Game 2 on Friday to sweep the Class 4A Division II series that was held at Lubbock Christian University.

Brock (27-10) will move on to the Region I championship game where the Eagles will face Amarillo Randall (30-8). Randall swept past Snyder 9-5 and 18-11.

Brock had 8 of its 10 hits, 5 walks and a hit batter in the fourth inning. Laynie Marriott had 2 singles and 3 RBI in the inning.

Kayden Blue went 2 for 4 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBI and Kathryn Utley had 2 hits in 3 at bats with a run scored and 5 RBI. Ali Coleman got the win tossing 6 innings allowing 2 earned runs on 6 hits.

Brock downed Canyon 8-3 in Game 1 on Thursday with the Eagles taking a 6-0 lead after 2 innings. Coleman tossed 7 innngs allowing 3 runs, 1 earned on 5 hits with 6 strikeouts and 1 walk.

Laynie Marriott was 2 for 4 with a double and 2 RBI and Trinity Franklin went 3 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.
