Fastball - UIL area-round softball: Eaton sweeps Eastlake and more, plus area scores
Welcome to the high school softball edition of the Fastball, a Star-Telegram series highlighting Fort Worth-area teams. The UIL area round is in full swing so check out coverage and results.
Eaton’s big inning ousts Eastlake, Eagles sweep
Haslet Eaton broke open a close game with 5 runs in the fourth inning on its way to a 7-3 win over El Paso Eastlake in Game 2 on Friday and a sweep of their Class 6A Division I area-round series held at Lubbock-Cooper High School.
Eaton (28-9-1) moves on to the regional semifinals and will face Flower Mound (23-8-1). The Marauders blanked Arlington Martin 10-0 in 6 innings in a 1-game playoff on Wednesday.
Already up 2-1, the Eagles got a 1-out double to center from Erin Jacinto that drove in Ava Jacinto, who had also doubled, and Maddy Marr for a 4-1 lead. Four batters later, Adriana Cantu laced a bases-loaded, bases-clearing double to left to up the lead to 7-1.
Eaton pounded out 12 hits including Cantu who went 2 for 4 with 4 RBI while Faith Zajac (double, 2 runs), Taryn Adams and Marr also had 2 hits each. Layla Perez tossed 6 1/3 innings scattering 5 hits and allowing 3 runs, none earned, with 6 strikeouts and 6 walks.
Camila Tovar went 3 for 4 with an RBI for Eastlake (28-12).
In Game 1 on Thursday, Eaton recorded 4 home runs, 2 by Erin Jacinto, to run away from the Falcons 10-0 in 5 innings. Erin Jacinto led off the game with a lined shot to center field to give the Eagles and early 1-0 lead.
The game stayed that way until the top of the fourth when Erin Jacinto repeated the feat to center field, this time a 3-run shot with 2 outs, that drove in Ava Jacinto and Taylor Colon. Zajac followed with a solo shot to left to make it 5-0 and an RBI double by Cantu pushed the lead to 6-0.
With 2 out in the fifth, Adams blasted a grand slam to left to give Eaton a 10-0 lead. Bethany Bolton was stellar in the circle allowing 2 hits in 5 scoreless innings with 6 strikeouts and 1 walk.
Erin Jacinto finished 3 for 3 at the plate with 3 runs scored and 4 RBI for Eaton. Adams went 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 4 RBI with Zajac and Colon adding 2 hits each to the Eagles’ 12-hit attack.
Keller comeback stuns Socorro to secure sweep
Down to its final strike on consecutive batters, Keller pulled off the miracle comeback with 3 runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to stun El Paso Socorro 6-5 in Game 2 on Friday to sweep their Class 6A Division II area-round series held at Lubbock-Cooper High School.
Keller (26-10-1) had 2 runners on with 2 outs in the seventh when Socorro intentionally walked Avery Lawton to load the bases. Tinslee Cribbs came to the plate and went down 0-2 before beating out an infield grounder that scored Cambree Cribbs and pulled the Indians within 5-4.
Addi Clark also went down in the count 1-2 and took a pitch to right field for the walk-off, series-clinching, 2-run single that sent Keller to the third round for the fourth straight season.
The Indians trailed 3-2 when Landry Beaman tied it with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth, however, the Bulldogs scored 2 in the top of the sixth to regain the lead at 5-3.
Keller took the series lead, 4-2 on Thursday as Texas Tech signee Sydona Meiser was a double shy of the cycle. Her solo home run in the fifth gave the Indians a 2-0 lead.
Mackenna Jackson, a Kansas signee, gave Keller some insurance with an RBI double in the top of the seventh and then scored on a double steal that made it 4-1.
Starting pitcher Calliee Cribbs tossed 4 shutout innings for Keller, which snapped Socorro’s 15-game winning streak and handed the Bulldogs their first loss since Feb. 28.
Things don’t get any easier for the Indians who will have to face Denton Guyer (32-2) in the regional semifinals. Guyer routed Richardson Pearce, 16-0 and 15-0 and the Wildcats have reached the final four for 3 consecutive seasons.
Brewer sweeps Burleson to reach regional semis
Fort Worth Brewer jumped out to a 6-run lead and then held off Burleson 7-4 to win Game 2 on Thursday and sweep their Class 5A Division II area-round series that was held at Mansfield High School.
Brewer (21-8) will meet El Paso Parkland (32-6) next week in the regional semifinals after the Matadors swept Wichita Falls Memorial, both games by 1 run.
The Bears smashed 3 home runs in the game with Avery Welch getting things started with a 2-run shot in the bottom of the first after a 1-out walk to Haylie Jimenez. Jimenez homered with 2 out in the third to up the lead to 3-0 and Samantha Aguirre’s 3-run shot in the gave Brewer a comfortable 6-0 lead.
Trailing 7-1 in the sixth, Lola Andrews doubled in a run and Savannah Skaggs had an RBI single as the Elks scored 3 times to cut the lead to 7-4. But Burleson (23-9) could only muster a 2-out single in the seventh as the Elks were retired on 3 ground ball outs.
In Game 1 on Wednesday, Brewer trailed 6-2 heading into the fifth inning, but tied it there and scored single runs in the sixth and seventh for an 8-6 win. Jimenez’s 3-run home run in the fifth sparked the 4-run inning plated Charisma Johnson and Ava Pena to tie the game.
Kayleigh Pena went 2 for 4 with a double, 2 runs scored and an RBI for Burleson. Andrews’ 2-run single in the first helped the Elks jump out to a 3-0 lead. Ava Pena went 3 for 5 at the plate with a triple for Brewer with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.
Joshua gets past Argyle in 3 games to advance
Joshua sophomore pitcher Bella Lambert threw a gem to help the Owls clinch the series over Argyle with a 6-2 win in Game 3 on Friday night in their Class 5A Division II area-round matchup held at Saginaw High School.
Joshua (28-7) advance to the third round for the second time in 3 years. The Owls will face Abilene Wylie (22-13), which dispatched El Paso Del Valle in 2 games, 5-2 and 5-0.
Joshua scored more runs in Game 3 than it did in the first two as the Owls scored 3 times in the bottom of the first inning in the deciding game. Leilanie Sam and Taylor Proffitt hit back-to-back RBI singles and Bella Brown drove in Sam with a sacrifice fly to give the Owls a 3-0 edge.
Molly Young hit a lead-off single in the second and came around to score on an RBI single from Sam that made it 4-0. The Owls added 2 runs in the fifth inning on an RBI double from Proffitt, who then scored on a single to right field by Evelyn Tate.
Lambert allowed 2 hits and 0 runs through 6 innings before the Eagles (17-18) scored both runs in the top of the seventh. Lambert finished the complete-game win with 5 hits allowed and 2 strikeouts.
She was even better in Joshua’s Game 1 win on Wednesday, going all 9 innings as the Owls won 3-1. Lambert allowed 1 unearned run on 6 hits and struck out 6 Eagles.
Tate drove in the go-ahead run and Alexis White scored the insurance run for the Owls in the top of the ninth inning.
Joshua had a chance for the sweep on Thursday, leading 2-0 after 6, but Argyle scored 3 runs in the top of the seventh to win Game 2 to even the series.
The Eagles loaded the bases with 1 out in the seventh before Brooklyn Barnett scored on a Joshua error that made it 2-1. Reagan King and Heather Harbach then scored on a fielder’s choice by Emily Davis to give Argyle a 3-2 lead.
Landrie Durham hit a lead-off single in the Joshua seventh, but Argyle pitcher Presley Hawkesworth got the next three batters out. White started in the circle for Joshua in Game 2 and allowed 4 hits and struck out 5 before being pulled for Lambert with 1 out in the seventh.
Hawkesworth pitched all 22 innings in the series for Argyle and finished with 11 strikeouts. She didn’t allow an earned run in Game 2.
Brock gets a pair of shutouts to eliminate Eagle Mountain
Ali Coleman tossed a pair of gems for Brock including a 3-hit shoutout of Eagle Mountain in a 10-0, 6-inning victory in Game 2 on Thursday to sweep their Class 4A Division II area-round series that took place at Cleburne High School.
Brock (25-10) will face Canyon (24-13) in the regional semifinals next week after Canyon blasted Clint to advance.
Coleman scattered 3 hits, all singles, while striking out 7 and walking 2. The junior was also 2 for 3 at the plate with a double.
Brock scored 6 times in the fourth inning, all with 2 outs, highlighted by a 2-run single to center by Sloan Booth that drove home Ashlyn Attaway and Kayden Blue. Kathryn Utley had a 2-run single to drive in Blue and Jayci Smith to cap a 4-run sixth.
Zoe Hawthorne, Karah Cardinal and Hannah Griggs reached on hits for Eagle Mountain (21-15-1). Knights’ pitcher Ashlyn Eggleton didn’t get much help on the mound allowing 6 runs, only 1 earned, in 5 innings as Eagle Mountain committed 5 errors.
Coleman was even better in Game 1 on Wednesday, tossing a 2-hitter and striking out 14 and walking none in a 2-0 win. The game was scoreless until the sixth inning when a walk to Booth and a passed ball set up an RBI single to center by Utley for a 1-0 lead.
Jacee Riddle, courtesy runner for Utley, scored later in the inning on an error. Kymber Dodson went 2 for 3 at the plate for Brock.
