Fastball - Friday baseball: Boswell takes 3-6A title and more, plus area scores
Welcome to the high school baseball edition of the Fastball, a Star-Telegram series highlighting Fort Worth-area teams. See coverage and results.
Boswell wins outright 3-6A title
Fort Worth Boswell opened a 4-run lead on Mansfield Lake Ridge, but the Eagles rallied to no avail as the Pioneers walked away with a 4-3 win to take the District 3-6A title on Friday at Boswell High School.
Boswell (21-8-3 overall, 9-3 district) could have been tied with a win by Lake Ridge (19-10-2, 8-4) as well as a win by Mansfield (15-14-1, 8-4), but the Tigers lost to Weatherford 4-1 on Friday night.
Boswell will be the top seed in the Division II playoffs with Mansfield Legacy (22-8, 8-4) as the second seed. Mansfield and Lake Ridge will now have to decide the first and second seeds in the Division I bracket.
Early errors by the Eagles allowed Braylin Caston to score after walking to open the bottom of the first. A bases-loaded walk to Moses Norris made it 2-0. Boswell added 2 more in the fifth when Xander Thacker singled in Caston and then scored on a balk later in the inning.
Lake Ridge cut the lead to 4-1 with a sacrifice fly by Thijs Fallon in the sixth to score Ethan Cardenas. The Eagles got 2 more in the seventh on a bases-loaded walk to Jayde Austin and a passed ball, but Fallon grounded out to end the game.
Northwest win over Timber Creek gives Carroll berth
Southlake Carroll earned a playoff berth without even playing a district game on Friday night as Justin Northwest shocked Keller Timber Creek 5-4 in the District 4-6A finale on Friday at Timber Creek High School.
Timber Creek (18-14 overall, 7-9 district) could have clinched the final playoff berth outright with a sweep of the Texans, but Northwest (10-18-2, 4-11) swept the Falcons, winning on Tuesday 4-0, giving idle Southlake Carroll (13-18-1, 8-8) the final playoff spot.
Northwest jumped out to 4-0 lead after 3 innings on a pair of RBI singles by Owen Stone and Jackson Merritt in the second inning and a wild pitch and sacrifice fly by Braylon D’Angelo in the third. Timber Creek countered with 2 in the fifth on a double by Layton Allen.
An RBI double by Trey Poe in the sixth upped the lead to 5-2 and the Falcons never recovered. Timber Creek rallied for 2 runs in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double by Aiden Lumas and a run-scoring single by Rayne Rojas, but Poe came on in relief and retired the next 3 batters to get out of the inning.
Aledo completes perfect district slate
Aledo completed a perfect 12-0 District 5-5A schedule as the Bearcats thumped Azle 18-5 on Friday night at Azle High School.
It was quite a turn around from the first game of the series on Tuesday when Aledo (29-3 overall, 12-0 district) scored 3 times late to slip past Azle (16-13-1, 4-8) 3-2 and eliminate the Hornets from playoff contention.
The game was tied 5-5 after 3 innings, but Aledo put up 3 runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings and added a 6 spot in the top of the seventh. Landon Barnes had the big blow in the seventh with a double that drove in 2.
Barnes went 4 for 5 at the plate with 3 runs scored and 5 RBI to lead the Bearcats. Martin Balderas doubled twice in 3 at bats, scored a run and drove in a run for Azle.
Aledo will head to the playoffs as the top seed from 5-5A in Division I with Granbury as the second seed. Fort Worth Brewer will be the top seed in Division II with Fort Worth Chisholm Trail in the second spot.
