Day 1 of the UIL state soccer championships kick off on Thursday with the Class 4A Division I and Division II boys and girls title games from Birkelbach Field on the campus of Georgetown High School.

Bridgeport comeback nets 1st title

Bridgeport’s Jared Contreras recorded a hat trick and the Bulls scored three times in overtime to down Brookshire Royal 5-2 in the boys Class 4A Division II championship game on Thursday.

Bridgeport (22-3-0) avenged a 3-1 loss to Royal (28-2-1) in early January in a tournament when the Falcons scored 3 first-half goals . The Bulls were making their second appearance in a title game, losing to Kilgore in a shootout in 2017.

Royal, which had won 17 games in a row heading into its first title game, jumped out early on Bridgeport, scoring in the first 25 seconds of the match on a goal by Jerson Perez to take a 1-0 lead.

The Bulls got the equalizer in the 19th minute when David Duran took a corner kick that was headed out by a Royal defender right to Contreras, the Championship Game MVP, who took a hard shot from 10 yards out that deflected off the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

But Royal retook the lead just three minutes later when Perez hit the back of the net again for a 2-1 lead. From that point, the Falcons struggle to even just get a shot off as the Bulls out shot Royal 22-6 overall and 8-5 on goal.

Xxavier Garza tied the game 2-2 in the 47th minute on a goal off of an assist by Duran. Perez had a chance to give the lead back to Royal in the 62nd minute, but missed on a penalty kick.

Instead, the game went to overtime where Bridgeport scored two times in the first 10-minute OT period on goals by Contreras just over a minute apart starting in the 86th minute. Contreras is the first player to score 3 goals in a championship game over all classes.

Garza added some insurance in the 97th minute of the second overtime period getting his brace.

Celina girls win 5th straight title

The Celina girls won its fifth straight soccer title on the strength of a heart-breaking own goal by Salado in the 69th minute in the Class 4A Division I championship game on Thursday.

Both teams were used to controlling play as Salado (27-2-0) allowed 8 goals all season while Celina (26-1-1) allowed only 12 goals all season. The Bobcats only loss was to 5A DII semifinalist Frisco Wakeland, 3-0, and Celina’s tie was a scoreless match against 4A DII champion Wimberley.

Salado’s only other loss on the season was a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Burleson early in the season. Celina out shot the Eagles 14-3 in the title game.

After a nil-nil draw in the first half, Salado (27-2-0) scored first on a goal by Lucy Johnson in the 43rd minute off an assist by Cassidy Lange. Ryleigh Stifflemire, the Championship Game MVP, got the equalizer in the 59th minute for Celina when she buried a shot in top left.

La Vega boys end magical season-ending run by Lake Dallas

Angel Cervantes Calvillo was able to just push the ball past the goalkeeper in the 44th minute to give Waco La Vega its first state championship 1-0 over Lake Dallas in the Class 4A Division I title game on Thursday.

Dovanny Morales assisted on the only goal for La Vega (27-2-0) in a game that was evenly matched. Both teams recorded 8 shots with the Pirates getting 4 on goal to 2 for the Falcons.

Lake Dallas thought that they had the equalizer in the 49th minute on a goal by Cooper Denehie, but the play was ruled offside.

Lake Dallas (11-7-6) started the season 1-6-5 before reeling off a 10-0-1 record before the title game. Both teams were making their first appearances in a championship game.

Alex Zaleta Rubio recorded the clean sheet for La Vega. Calvillo was voted at the game’s Most Valuable Player.

Wimberley gets redemption title over Sunnyvale

Wimberley reached the state championship game a year ago just to be ousted by Amarillo Randall 3-2 in a shootout with a 7-6 deficit in penalty kicks. This season the Texans left no doubt.

Championship Game MVP Emma Durkin, a sophomore, scored in the 7th minute to get the ball rolling for Wimberley (25-2-1) as the Texans earned the Class 4A Division I championship with a 3-1 win over Sunnyvale on Thursday.

Emma Durkin’s goal was set up by a hand ball by Sunnyvale just outside of the penalty box. Emma Durkin curled the ball around the Raiders’ wall and into the back of the net. Emma Durkin’s twin sister Abby Durkin gave the Texans a 2-0 lead when a corner kick bounced around and found her foot, hitting the back of the net.

Wimberley had not allowed a goal in the playoffs until Macy Martin scored for Sunnyvale on a penalty kick in the 59th minute, giving the Raiders some hope. But a goal by Samantha Santana in the 69th minute, assisted by Dylan Watson, proved to be all the cushion the Texans would need.
