The Mustangs, however, took a 4-3 advantage in penalty kicks in the shootout to oust Argyle 1-0 (SO 4-3) in the Class 5A Division 2 Region 1 Final on Tuesday at Northwest ISD Stadium.

Grapevine (17-5-6), which won state in 2023, moves on to the state semifinals to face Frisco Wakeland (25-0-0). Wakeland defeated Lucas Lovejoy 2-1 on Tuesday.

Brooke Turner, Eugenia Jin, Maddie Patton and Tatum Harig converted penalty kicks in the shootout for the Mustangs. Brooke Bereuter was masterful in goal for Grapevine shutting out Argyle (18-4-3) until the shootout, including stopping a key penalty kick in the first half.

Keller stymies defending champ Coppell

Claire Garritson scored the game-winning goal in the second half and Keller hung on to beat defending state champion Coppell 2-1 in the Class 6A Division 1 Region 1 Final on Tuesday night at Keller High School.

Keller (21-4-1) advances to its second state semifinal match and first since 2017. The Indians take on Sachse (26-2-0) who defeated Spring Grand Oaks 4-0 on Tuesday.

Coppell (22-3-1) beat Keller 4-1 in last year’s regional semifinals and then won the state title over Austin Lake Travis 6-2. The Cowgirls also beat Keller 3-0 on Jan. 2.

The Cowgirls took a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute on a goal from Lydia Kennington. Keller tied it in the 29th minute with a goal by Ella Gutierrez.

Centennial ousts Colleyville Heritage in a shootout

Burleson Centennial and Colleyville Heritage battled it out for 100 minutes, but had to go to penalty kicks to decide their Class 5A Division 2 Region 1 Final on Tuesday at Crowley ISD Multi-Purpose Stadium.

Tied 1-1 at the end of overtime, the Spartans held a 4-3 advantage in the shootout to take a 2-1 win. Avery Slattery put in what proved to be the game winner as Centennial’s fifth shooter.

Burleson Centennial (19-1-4) moves on to the state semifinals for the first time in school history and will meet Prosper Walnut Grove (22-2-1). Walnut Grove blanked Frisco Reedy 2-0 on Tuesday.

The match was 0-0 until the 83rd minute in the first overtime when Andie Hafner took a pass and then slipped it past a defender and the keeper from 13 yards out to give Centennial a 1-0 lead. But just a minute later the Panthers answered when Emersen Andries sent a 30-yard blast home.

In addition to Slattery, Mardie Frye, Charlie Watson and Jayde Hudson scored goals in the shootout for Centennial. Addison Atkins, Emily Peikert and Ashlyn Bringedahl converted penalty kicks for Colleyville Heritage.

Addy White was stellar in goal for the Spartans in the second half, overtime and the shootout. White, who spelled Elissa Ferguson at the half, had one save in the shootout that was pivotal.

The first half was pretty even, but the Colleyville Heritage (16-4-2) did put a little more pressure on, despite going into a steady 15-20 mile-per-hour wind. The Panthers had 6 shots, 4 on goal in the first half with the best chance being a 25-yard shot by Camille Seeley in the 36th minute that bounced off of Ferguson’s hands, but Ferguson was able to gather in the short rebound.

Centennial only had 2 shots with its best chance coming in the 23rd minute when a blast from Watson hit the football crossbar. Colleyville Heritage controlled the second half with 6 more shots and 2 on goal.

A nice cross from Addison Shimmick in the 49th minute for Colleyville Heritage found Reagan Yearian in front of the left side of the net, but her header went just over the top of the crossbar. A penalty and free kick in the 57th minute by Centennial’s Slattery from 19 yards out was just over the crossbar.

Sophomore Maura Hayes gave Carroll a 2-0 lead in the 46th minute. Caroline Holcombe slipped a perfect pass to Audrey Anderson in the box, but her shot attempt bounced off the hands of Sophie Strain, the goalkeeper for Guyer (20-4-1).
