No. 1 Heritage rolls to 5A DI title over No. 2 West Brook

It was another No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup in the Class 5A Division I state title game as top-ranked Frisco Heritage took on Beaumont West Brook. It was a tale of two halves as the Coyotes dominated the first half while West Brook took control in the final two quarters.

When the dust settled it was too much Bryson Howard. The Heritage guard, a Duke signee, scored 28 points as the Coyotes held on for a 60-47 win on Saturday. It was the first state title game appearance for Heritage (34-2), No. 1 in the state in Class 5A according to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, after falling to North Richland Hills Birdville in the state semifinals last season.

It was also the second title game appearance for No. 2 West Brook (34-4) after winning it all in 2025, also against Birdville.

Howard, who completed a double double with 15 rebounds, started a 12-0 run for the Coyotes with a jumper with 4:57 left in the second quarter. Howard ended the spree with one of his 3 three pointers giving Heritage a 30-13 lead with 28 seconds left before halftime.

Howard, the Championship Game Most Valuable Player, scored 15 of his 28 points and 15 of the team’s 17 points in the second quarter.

But the Bruins weren’t done. West Brook started a 12-0 run of its own early in the third quarter and cut the lead to 9 with 1:08 left in the third on a layup by Elijah Garrett, who led the Bruins with 17 points.

A pair of free throws by Howard pushed the lead back to double digits and Howard put a stamp on it with a pair of thunderous dunks, one on a terrific assist from SMU commit Cameron Lomax. West Brook couldn’t get the deficit below 10 points the rest of the way.

Lomax took over in the fourth quarter scoring 11 of his 17 points in the final frame. Lomax added 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals to the stat sheet.

It was a reversal for Heritage from the state semifinal against Birdville when Lomax poured in 30 points and Howard chipped in 19.

No. 3 Little Elm takes 6A DII title, throttles Westlake

Little Elm took full advantage of its first trip to a state championship game as the Lobos built a double-digit lead at the half and then coasted to a 57-35 win over Austin Westlake in the Class 6A Division II championship game on Saturday.

Championship Game MVP Joshua Weems led Little Elm (37-2), ranked No. 3 in the state in Class 6A by the TABC, with 16 points, 6 rebounds, 8 assists and 3 steals.

It was the second state championship game for No. 21 Westlake (32-7). The Chaparrals lost twice in the state semifinals (2022 and 2018) and was defeated by Duncanville in the 2021 Class 6A championship.

Westlake didn’t get many shots off in the first half and the ones they did wouldn’t go down. The Chaparrals shot a woeful 13% (2 of 15) in the first half and trailed 26-10 at the break. Things got a little better for Westlake in the second half, but the Chaps could never get the deficit below double digits.

Little Elm’s biggest lead of 24 points came twice in the fourth quarter. The first time with 2:27 left in the game on a layup by Weems.

Ian Berry added 15 points, 3 rebounds and 3 steals for the Lobos. Kensington Candler had 9 points, 5 assists and 5 steals while Eli Fegans pulled down 10 rebounds and scored 5 points.

Bo Ogden led Westlake with 18 points, 13 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. Westlake finished shooting 21.7% (10 of 46) and went 2 of 22 from beyond the arc while Little Elm was 23 of 56 (41.1%) from the floor.
