Boys HS Basketball Playoff Fast Break: Mansfield Summit handles Saginaw; more

Welcome to The Fast Break, boys playoff edition. A Star-Telegram series featuring the top Fort Worth-area high school basketball news, performances and results from the UIL area round.

No. 2 Summit eases past Saginaw

Four players scored in double figures led by David Bardere’s game-high 18 points as Mansfield Summit went on to rout Saginaw 63-37 in a Class 5A Division II area-round contest on Friday night at Coppell High School.

Summit (29-6), the defending 5A DII state champions and No. 7 in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches 5A state rankings, will play El Paso Andress (24-9) in the regional semifinals early next week. Andress dispatched Abilene Wylie 69-64 on Friday.

Summit led 27-13 at the intermission and extended its lead to 20 by the end of the third quarter. Emund Prichett II chipped in 13 points for the Jaguars while Mason Williams and Jaxon Sneed added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Saginaw’s Willie McCrary Jr. scored a team-high 10 points. The Rough Riders end their season at 16-17.

No. 2 North Crowley pounds Eastlake

North Crowley got a game-high 18 points from Isaak Hayes as the Panthers steadily pulled away from El Paso Eastlake 73-57 in a Class 6A Division I area-round playoff on Thursday at Sul Ross State University in Alpine.

North Crowley (31-3), No. 2 in the state in 6A according to the TABC, advances to the regional semifinals and a date with Coppell (26-11) early next week. Coppell defeated Arlington Martin 63-60 on Friday.

The Panthers broke open a 6-point game at the half by outscoring Eastlake (29-9) by 9 points (19-10) in the third quarter to take a 55-40 lead. Alex Barther II added 16 points for North Crowley with Trey Hall and Jonathan Fox chipping in 11 points each.

Eaton blows out Franklin to advance

Haslet Eaton broke open a close game after one quarter en route to a 64-35 win over El Paso Franklin in a Class 6A Division I area-round tilt on Friday afternoon at Odessa Permian High School.

The Eagles led 9-8 at the end of the first quarter, but Eaton outscored Franklin 27-11 in the second period and 55-27 in the final three frames. Seniors Caleb Harris and D’Andre Goodman led the way for Eaton with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Goodman added 3 steals and Harris recorded 7 rebounds. Kent Kelly had 12 points, Michael Mwamba added 10 points and 4 assists while junior Wesley Zenon had 6 points and 8 rebounds.

Eaton (28-7) moves on and will face No. 24 Allen in the regional semifinals. Allen (23-6), which slipped past South Grand Prairie 46-43, will play Eaton at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Coppell High School.

Frankin’s season ends at 24-10.

Mansfield starts slow, thumps Eastwood

Mansfield got off to a slow start against El Paso Eastwood in their Class 6A Division II area-round playoff, but the Tigers rebounded in the second and third quarters to pull away 76-58 on Friday afternoon at Midland Christian High School.

With the win, Mansfield (25-8) moves on to the regional semifinals and a date early next week with Little Elm (33-2), ranked No. 3 in the state by the TABC in Class 6A. Little Elm dumped Dallas Jesuit 66-42 on Friday.

The Tigers got outscored 15-11 in the first quarter, but rallied to a 46-17 advantage in the second and third quarters to coast home. Preston Jackson led Mansfield with 20 points, one of four Tigers in double-digit scoring.

K.T. Turner finished with 11 points with Zion Robinson and Caden Shaver chipping in 10 points each. Deuce Anderson just missed the double-digit party with 9 points.

Riley Rodriguez led the Troopers with 14 points with Julien Falk-Ramirez adding 11 for Eastwood (20-14).

No. 6 Birdville edges Centennial in area round

North Richland Hills Birdville got 24 points from Avery Webb as the Hawks held off Burleson Centennial 63-58 in a Class 5A Division I area-round game on Friday at the Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center in Fort Worth.

Birdville (29-5), No. 6 in Class 5A in the latest TABC state poll, moves on to the regional semifinals and will meet Amarillo Tascosa (27-6), a 63-54 winner over El Paso Chapin on Friday.

Dylan Roberts led Cenntennial with 16 points which included 4 three pointers. The Spartans season ends at 23-12.

No. 13 Southwest nips Stephenville in thriller

Senior guard Chan Davis poured in 20 points and delivered key plays down the stretch as Fort Worth Southwest edged Stephenville 49-48 in a Class 4A Division I area-round thriller on Friday night at Aledo High School.

Southwest (27-7), No. 13 in the state in Class 4A according to the TABC, moves on to the regional semifinal round where the Runnin’ Raiders will meet No. 16 Amarillo West Plains (29-4) early next week. West Plains defeated San Elizario 55-25 on Thursday.

Stephenville’s season ends at 30-5.

No. 10 Kennedale takes down Van Alstyne

Senior guards Jacoby Lovings and Trey Smith scored 14 and 11 points, respectively, as Kennedale defeated Van Alstyne 60-47 in a Class 4A Division II area-round game on Friday at Little Elm Braswell High School.

Kennedale (30-5), TABC’s No. 10 team in Class 4A, will face Tyler Chapel Hill (32-2) in the regional semifinals next week. Chapel Hill ousted Texarkana Pleasant Grove 74-64 on Friday.

The Wildcats outscored Van Alstyne (24-11) by 7 points in both the first and third quarters to help pull away. Bryson Hickerson added 9 points for Kennedale with Jayden Miller and Mason Forbes contributing 8 points each.

Garrett Skaggs scored 16 points for the Panthers while Xzayvion Mack tossed in 11.

Dunbar no match for No. 24 Brock

Brock junior Eli Paez poured in 24 points and added 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals and 3 blocks to lead the Eagles to a 67-38 drubbing of Fort Worth Dunbar in a Class 4A Division II area-round game on Thursday at Aledo High School.

Brock (26-9), No. 24 in Class 4A according to the TABC, moves on to the regional semifinals where the Eagles will face Amarillo Randall (15-20). Randall defeated El Paso Mountain View 84-54 on Thursday.

Brock jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, but Dunbar (17-14) got back-to-back threes from Jazz Kirven and Jermon Newton to cut the lead to 10-8 with 2:48 left in the first quarter. The Eagles went on a 7-0 run of its own after that, capped by a crowd electrifying dunk by Paez to push the lead to 9 points.

The Wildcats cut the lead to 5 points at 17-12 at the end of the first quarter, but another 7-0 run by Brock gave the Eagles a 12-point lead (24-12) and Dunbar never recovered. Brock built the lead to 31 points when Eagles’ coach Zach Boxell cleared his bench and freshman Casen Christenson threw down another crowd-pleasing, thunderous dunk to make it 65-34 with 2:01 left in the game.

Will McGee and Jacoby Boxell added 14 points each with McGee contributing 4 rebounds and Jacoby Boxell pulling down 4 rebounds with 4 assists and 3 steals. Brady Williams recorded 8 rebounds and 4 points.

Kirven and Houston Porter led Dunbar with 8 points each. Josiah Williams had 6 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 5 steals for the Wildcats.
