BOYS
No. 10 Timberview holds off No. 2 Summit in thriller
When two of the best teams in the state get together and they just so happen to be cross-town rivals you get a packed gym and a playoff environment. That’s exactly what happened at Mansfield Timberview High School on Tuesday night as Timberview, No. 10 in the state in Class 5A according to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, jumped out to a quick lead then held off No. 2 Mansfield Summit 50-45 in a District 8-5A contest.
Timberview (26-4 overall, 11-1 district) kept its district title hopes after Summit (24-6, 11-1) won the first meeting. Both teams are headed to the playoffs.
The Wolves went on a 17-2 run in the first quarter which helped Timberview jump out to a 21-8 lead after one. Summit tried to come back, but Timberview hit big shot after big shot to keep the Jaguars at arms length, paced by Jonathan Williams who scored 12 of his 13 points in the first half.
Summit was able to cut Timberview’s lead to 6 points in the third quarter and down to 44-43 with 3:12 left in the game, but both times the Wolves rallied. Summit’s only lead of the game was 3-2 after a three pointer by Joseph Creal III at the 7:31 mark of the first quarter.
Jaxon Sneed scored 8 of his team-high 15 points in the fourth quarter for Summit. Creal finished with 13 for the Jaguars.
Jason Washington was stellar for Timberview, leading all scorers with 17 points which included hitting 11 of 12 free throws. The Wolves went 17 of 21 from the free-throw line.
Martin survives furious South Grand Prairie rally
No. 16 South Grand Prairie scored 31 points in the fourth quarter, but fell just short as Arlington Martin held on for a 67-60 win in a District 8-6A game. Both teams have already qualified for the playoffs.
Martin (19-12 overall, 9-3 district) had built a 19-point lead after three quarters as 5 players scored in double figures on the night. Jeremy Nyakundi led the way with 17 points with Steven Reynolds III (13 points), Jeremiah Ellis (12), Levi Moore (11) and Ephraim Aimiuwu (10) also contributing.
Jacobi Ewing led South Grand Prairie (19-11, 10-2) scoring 9 of his game-high 19 points in the fourth quarter. Ewing had 3 three pointers in the game and J.B. Pirtle added 16 points for SGP with 12 coming in the final period.
L.D. Bell turns up the defensive pressure to rip Trinity
Hurst L.D. Bell led by 2 points after the first quarter, but turned up the defensive pressure en route to a 52-33 win over rival Euless Trinity in District 4-6A play.
L.D. Bell (21-7 overall, 11-3 district) remained in second place with the win. Jesse Mikus led the Blue Raiders with 13 points, 7 rebounds, 5 steals and 4 blocked shots.
Keyaun Williams dropped in 10 points for L.D. Bell with Roman Washington contributing 9 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals. Trinity drops to 11-19 overall and 5-9 in district play.
Granbury rallies for first district win, drops Chisholm Trail
Granbury rallied from 14 points down at the end of the first quarter and Tyler Harrison hit the game winner with 12 seconds left as the Pirates earned their first district win of the season 39-37 over Fort Worth Chisholm Trail.
Kylan Loving led Granbury (5-25 overall, 1-9 district) with 14 points, including 3 threes. Harrison added 8 points for the Pirates.
Jesse Mutombo reached the 1,000-point threshold in the loss for Chisholm Trail (10-14, 4-5), which hurt its playoff chances with the loss. Mutombo led the Rangers with 10 points with De’vion Johnson adding 8, all in the first quarter, including 2 three pointers.
No. 7 Birdville slips past Argyle
Sawyer Dotson poured in 30 points as North Richland Hills Birdville, No. 7 in Class 5A according to the TABC, escaped with a 56-50 win over Argyle in District 6-5A play.
Birdville (26-4 overall, 8-1 district) remains in second place, a half game behind Denton. Argyle drops to 18-13 overall and 2-8 in district play.
Seguin rips Burleson, remains fourth in 8-5A
Zoderick Green paced Arlington Seguin with 17 points as the Cougars held on to fourth place in District 8-5A with a 69-42 win over Burleson.
Kalob Edgerson added 14 points, Armani Green chipped in 12 and Osiel Reyes had 9 points for Seguin (21-8 overall, 7-5 district). Burleson dropped to 19-15 overall and 3-9 in district play.
No. 10 Kennedale all but wraps up 12-4A title, rallies past Life
Kennedale, No. 10 in Class 4A according to the TABC, exploded for 24 fourth-quarter points to rally past Waxahachie Life 55-46 to all but wrap up the District 12-4A title.
Kennedale (26-5 overall, 11-0 district) trailed 34-31 entering the final quarter, but the dynamic guard duo of Trey Smith and Jacoby Lovings took over the final frame scoring 16 points between the two of them. Smith finished with a game-high 24 points with Lovings chipping in 12, 10 of which came in the fourth.
Life (26-6, 8-2) has already claimed a playoff berth. The Mustangs were led by Ramiro Moreno who had 13 points, including 3 threes.
Covenant Classical wins TAPPS District 1-3A title
Fort Worth Covenant Classical defeated Kennedale Fellowship 82-52 to win the TAPPS District 1-3A title on Tuesday.
Covenant Classical (19-11 overall, 10-0 district) finished undefeated in district for the first time. Jack Liebelt led the Cavaliers with 15 points, Howard Wade dropped in 12 and Noah Leshner added 9.
Fellowship dropped to 11-10 overall and 5-5 in district.
GIRLS
Summit cruises into playoffs with win over Timberview
Madison Jones scored 15 of her game-high 20 points in the first half as Mansfield Summit outscored Mansfield Timberview by 15 points in the second quarter then coasted to a 56-35 win in a District 8-5A game.
Summit (22-10 overall, 11-3 district) has already clinched a playoff berth and will be in the Class 5A Division II bracket. But the Jaguars will have to wait until Everman and Burleson Centennial have a fourth-place tie-breaker playoff on Thursday to find out if they will be the top seed or second seed.
Maya Williams chipped in 9 points for Summit with Kyleigh Smith dropping in 8. Timberview (7-23, 3-11) was led by Shanella Tadja with 14 points and Andrea McGriff who added 10.
Keller eases past Eaton in finale
Keller got 14 points from Mia Arnold as the Indians downed Haslet Eaton 47-40 in a District 4-6A contest. Keller (23-7 overall, 13-3 district) will be the top-seed out of 4-6A in the Class 6A Division I playoffs.
Dahlia Rebella added 10 points for Keller with Zoe Soto dropping in 9. Eaton (5-11, 11-20) was led by Mika Welsh who had a game-high 17 points including 3 threes.
South Grand Prairie edges Martin
South Grand Prairie and Arlington Martin are both headed to the playoffs and the two teams played a defensive slugfest in the final District 8-6A contest as SGP took a 28-20 win.
South Grand Prairie (21-12 overall, 12-2 district), the district champion, got 8 points from Janae Johnson and 6 from Zailey Crawford. Martin (12-19, 10-4), which finished in fourth place, got 8 points each from Kenzley Sanchez and Naariah Hollimon.
SGP will be the top-seed in the Class 6A Division I playoffs and Martin will be the second seed in DI.
No. 14 Aledo finishes perfect in 5-5A, thumps Azle
Aledo, No. 14 in the latest TABC Class 5A state poll, finished the District 5-5A slate with an unblemished record as the Bearcats routed Azle 71-19 on Tuesday.
Aledo (24-7 overall, 12-0 district) was led by Tiara Butler who poured in 19 points. Elizabeth Griffin added 17 for the Bearcats who will be the top-seed in the Class 5A Division I playoffs.
Aledo will face Colleyville Heritage (15-16) at 5:30 p.m. on Monday at Fort Worth Eagle Mountain High School.
Centennial faces play-in after loss to Joshua
Burleson Centennial dropped the District 8-5A finale 47-40 to second-place Joshua and Everman lost to league leader Cleburne to force a playoff between Centennial (18-16 overall, 7-7 district) and Everman (21-14, 7-7) for the final playoff berth later this week.
Lyric Caldwell led Centennial with 12 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals. Reaghan Banks chipped in 8 points and Jaliyah McNeal pulled down 7 rebounds to go with 2 blocked shots and 5 points for the Spartans.
Cleburne finishes off perfect district slate, downs Everman
Alyssa Franklin led Cleburne with 21 points and played strong defense as the Yellow Jackets downed Everman 56-31 to complete an undefeated run through District 8-5A.
Cleburne (25-8 overall, 14-0 district), will be the top seed in the Class 5A Division I playoffs. Lily Sheppard and Izzy Guadamuz added 12 points each for the Jackets.
“I couldn’t be more proud of this group and the way they’ve handled business all season,” said Cleburne coach Tiffany Hill. The Yellow Jackets will play Fort Worth Arlington Heights (12-15) in the bi-district round of the 5A DI playoffs on Monday at 7 p.m. at Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center in Fort Worth.
Everman (21-14, 7-7) will play Burleson Centennial (18-16, 7-7) for the final playoff berth later this week.
Paschal sweeps 7-5A, rolls over Polytechnic
Fort Worth Paschal got 14 points from Audrina Bowers and 12 more from Bella Zoll as the Panthers completed an undefeated slate in District 7-5A with a 49-16 drubbing of Fort Worth Polytechnic.
Paschal (19-13 overall, 12-0 distrcit) won its second consecutive district title and will be the top seed in the Class 5A Division I playoffs. Polytechnic (6-19, 2-10) was led by Cecilia Aguilar with 9 points.
North Side gets 10th win, downs South Hills
Fort Worth North Side defeated Fort Worth South Hills 35-21 to finish a game behind the Scorpions who held on for the final playoff berth out District 7-5A.
North Side (10-16 overall, 4-8 district ), which earned its 10th win of the season, was led by senior Briana Rodriguez who led all scorers with 10 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. It was the second consecutive double-double for Rodriguez. Ja’Tavaia Allen, a junior, added 9 points.
South Hills falls to 6-19 overall and 5-7 in district, but the Scorpions will be the second seed in the Class 5A Division II playoffs.
