A national high school cheerleading competition scheduled for this weekend in Fort Worth will allow teams to compete virtually if they can’t travel because of the threat of severe weather.

The NCA High School Nationals are scheduled for Friday through Sunday at the Fort Worth Convention Center. Hundreds of athletes are expected to compete.

Brian Bianco, a spokesperson for Varsity Brands, which runs the event, said via email that the organization was providing “flexible options” for teams concerned about traveling.

“While we have not canceled any events due to weather, we are actively communicating with coaches and teams about flexible options, including the ability to compete at a virtual competition in lieu of NCA Nationals or competing on Sunday only,” he said. “Our goal is to help ensure everyone’s safety while maintaining the integrity of the competition, and we’ll share other updates with fans and teams as we get closer to the event.”

The virtual competition would be separate from the scheduled events.

“Teams are being urged to make a decision that makes the most sense for their program,” Bianco said. “If they need to cancel, we are offering the Virtual Championship as an alternative competition experience. Those routines will be recorded on Thursday and Friday with the results posting at the end of the weekend.”

Spectators who have purchased tickets can get refunds, Bianco said.

“We are working directly with our ticketing platform to ensure that spectators are able to be refunded for any tickets purchased up until this point,” he said.
