Welcome to The Fastbreak, a biweekly Star-Telegram series featuring the top Fort Worth-area high school basketball news, performances and results.
Game of the Week: Kennedale downs Alvarado
Kennedale is the defending Class 4A Division II state champion and while the cupboard is far from bare, it might be an uphill climb for the Wildcats to return to San Antonio.
The Wildcats only lost 2 players to graduation off of the 2025 championship team, but one was big man A’meir Williams who pulled down 14 rebounds in the title game. Another star in San Antonio was guard Trey Smith who scored 22 points in the championship game.
Smith has played very little in 2026 and is out indefinitely with a hip injury. But back are guards Jacoby Lovings (16 points in the title game) and Bryson Nickerson (11) to go along with Williams’ younger brother Keysean Williams.
The Wildcats looked like a team that could make some noise in the playoffs as Kennedale, No. 11 in the latest Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Class 4A state poll, demolished Alvarado 79-35 on Tuesday to improve to 4-0 in District 12-4A and 19-5 overall.
Kennedale jumped out to a 42-11 lead at the half behind Lovings who scored 9 of his 11 points in the first half. The Wildcats had four players in double-digit scoring with Lovings, A.J. Brown (10 points), Shehab Shamaka (12) and sophomore Kingston Jamerson leading the way with 19.
Kennedale coach Doug Groff substituted liberally in the second half. Alvarado (10-12 overall, 1-2 district) was led by Preston McDaniel who had 13 points.
