Former Arlington Lamar star gets shot with Kansas City Chiefs after QB injuries
The Kansas City Chiefs have been beset by quarterback injuries in the past two weeks, with superstar Patrick Mahomes tearing his ACL and backup Gardner Minshew suffering a knee injury Sunday.
Now out of playoff contention, the defending AFC champions brought in a familiar face to help finish out the season.
That face is Shane Buechele, who was signed off the Buffalo Bills’ practice squad. The Arlington native attended Lamar High School, then played in college for Texas before transferring to SMU under then-head coach Sonny Dykes (now at TCU) for his final two seasons.
Buechele wasn’t selected in the 2021 NFL draft but signed with the Chiefs. He was a member of the 2022 squad that won the Super Bowl before being cut in 2023 and signing with the Bills.
With Mahomes and Minshew gone, it will fall to Chris Oladokun or the recently signed Buechele to take over the reins for a Chiefs team preparing to miss the playoffs for the first time in the Mahomes era.
Oladokun is expected to start against the Denver Broncos on Christmas Day with Buechele as the backup.
Oladokun took his first NFL snaps Sunday after Minshew was injured, completing 11 of 16 passes for 111 yards. Buechele has never played in a regular-season game.
Buechele is the son of former Texas Rangers third baseman Steve Buechele, a fan favorite who later became a coach and is still involved with the franchise.
