No. 1 Southlake Carroll overcomes Prosper in late night regional round clash — PHOTOS

After a four hour weather delay, Southlake Carroll took another step forward in the UIL Texas high school football Class 6A Division II bracket.

The No. 1 Dragons took down No. 7 Prosper 49-31 Saturday at Choctaw Stadium. The game kicked off at 11:15 p.m. Friday and finished at 1:42 a.m. Saturday.

With the win, Southlake Carroll (13-0) has made it past the regional round every season with Riley Dodge at the helm. He said both programs wanted to get the game done on Friday if possible — the Dragons got their wish and capitalized.

Now, Carroll will face Denton Guyer (11-2) in a Class 6A Division II quarterfinal at a time and place that is to be determined.

“Coach [Reed Heim], they do a great job,” Dodge said. “We’ve played them for a long time, and it’s going to be a great football game for sure.”

The player of the game was undoubtedly defensive back Parker Harris, who finished with two rushing touchdowns, a passing TD and an interception on top of being one of the Dragons’ most reliable defenders. Harris finished just short of the 100-yard mark with 95 yards on eight carries.

“Got the run game going and the right times tonight,” Dodge said. “[Harris] was a great spark plug for us — a change of pace. And then Davis [Penn] at the end, finished it for us.”

To start the scoring, Carroll quarterback Angelo Renda, a Pitt pledge, found receiver Brody Knowles on a streak for a 36-yard TD. Renda followed that up with a 35-yard TD pass while rolling to his left to Ohio State pledge Brock Boyd to give Carroll a 14-0 first-quarter lead.

Renda was ultra-efficient, completing 13 of 15 passes for 234 yards and adding 72 yards on the ground on 12 carries. Boyd was his favorite target with five receptions for 125 yards.

“He’s the best in the state of Texas for a reason,” Dodge said. “He has done it for the last two years. Just calm. And he’s the steady presence for us offensively.”

The first half saw Southlake Carroll take a 28-17 lead behind Harris’ strong showing. After an interception, he had a 7-yard passing touchdown to wide receiver Blake Gunter from the wildcat formation and a 1-yard rushing score.

Harris credited the preparation and “staying locked in” during the rain delay for his performance.

First-half scoring for Prosper (11-2) came via a 1-yard rushing TD from QB Braeden Imhoff, a 20-yard rushing score from Bryce Robinson and a field goal. Imhoff finished with 298 yards passin,g completing 15 of 31, but with three interceptions.

After a three-and-out forced by the Dragon defense to start the third quarter, Renda found a wide-open Boyd for a 29-yard TD. Prosper’s Lathon Latiolais retaliated, heading toward the back corner pylon and making the catch with room to spare for a 16-yard TD that cut the lead to 35-24.

Harris continued the spectacular individual effort with a stiff arm en route to a breakaway 55-yard TD run. But Prosper stayed in the game with a 16-yard TD reception from Robinson, cutting the lead to 42-31 with 8:34 to go.

In an ultra-important drive, Carroll running back Davis Penn delivered a 31-yard TD to give his team an 18-point lead with 5:42 left in the game. Next, defensive back Gavin Strange, also the Dragons’ kicker, essentially sealed the deal with an interception.

Penn started slowly with only 14 yards rushing in the first half, but finished with 75 yards on 14 attempts.

“Let’s enjoy this win,” defensive back Luke Bussmann said. “I’m sure the coaches have a good game plan for us Monday. Just take it one week at a time.”
