Arlington Bowie spoils SGP’s undefeated run, wins consecutive district titles
South Grand Prairie entered the District 8-6A championship at UTA’s Maverick Stadium looking for their first undefeated season with an offense that was averaging 51 points per game.
But on Thursday in the District 8-6A championship game, Arlington Bowie rose to the occasion, seizing a 24-21 victory. SGP surged from behind to partially erase a 17 point fourth quarter lead, but in the end, Bowie’s defense stood tall.
The win gave Bowie (8-2, 7-0) back-to-back outright district championships for the first time in program history.
“This means a lot,” Bowie quarterback Jayden Bibbs said. “We’ve been grinding for this since last December. Going back-to-back— we made history. I see the work we put in. We deserve it.”
Bowie head coach Joseph Sam said he was super proud of the team’s performance.
“The kids did a great job,” Sam said. “They executed the game plan. The defense stepped up when we needed them to. The offense stepped up when we needed them to. [SGP] has explosive players. Coach [Laban] DeLay does a heck of a job. I’m just so thankful.”
The Vols will enter the Class 6A Division II bracket as the district’s top ranked squad with a District 7-6A opponent that is to be determined. In 2024, they defeated Dallas Jesuit in the bi-district round and fell to Hebron in the area round. Sam said they’ll continue to focus solely on being 1-0 every day.
SGP (8-1, 6-1) will enter the Class 6A Division I bracket as the district’s top seed.
“I’ve got to give credit to those guys,” Bibbs said of SGP. “The defense, they play safe. They do their jobs. I had to take a lot of check downs tonight. But ultimately, that’s what we have to do to win.”
Bowie struck first with a 20 yard touchdown pass from Bibbs to wide receiver Maxwell Nichols. Bibbs was calm and composed leading the offense with precision, passing for 250 yards and 3 touchdowns hitting 29 of 38 passes. He completed 12 straight to start the game.
“His superpower is that he is an elite decision maker,” Sam said. “The kids follow him, and he has made awesome decisions. And I’m just super proud of him.”
An interception from Bowie’s Kyle Smith, a 30-yard field goal from Leo Espinolda, a botched SGP punt and an 8 yard TD pass from Bibbs to Brody Ferguson gave the Vols a 17-0 lead — one they took into the half.
The defense kept SGP at bay with an interception from Princeton Campbell in the end zone and consecutive tackles for loss at the goal line that forced a missed field goal.
SGP was able to find the end zone to start the third quarter with a 32 yard rush from Josiah Lucas down the sideline but special teams woes fizzled the momentum. Lucas finished with 136 rushing yards and two TDs on 24 attempts.
Next, a 13 yard punt set up 21-yard touchdown from Bibbs to Darion Carson, which gave the Vols a 24-7 lead at the 3:57 mark in the third quarter.
SGP chipped away at the lead with another Lucas TD, and a Nichols fumble gave the Warriors a golden opportunity to do more damage. This time, QB Daylon Brooks took it himself for a 1 yard scoring scamper.
After a Bowie punt, SGP found themselves in a position to take the lead. Sam said the team staying the course and closing the game showcased their resilience.
“We had to fight through adversity in order to get this win,” Sam said.
Bowie linebacker Galatians Paogofie ended the threat, tipping a pass that resulted in a turnover.
“Defense won us this game,” Bibbs said. “They gave us four great quarters. The offense stalled out a couple times but they had our back. Ultimately, that’s how we won this game.”
Bowie held on to the ball until Warrior defensive back Kenneth Peck intercepted Bibbs at the SGP 10 with 8 seconds left.
A final Hail Mary by South fell incomplete at the Bowie 44 as time ran out. As the playoffs loom, Bibbs said the team will trust the culture that Sam has instilled in them.
“Always give it your all,” Bibbs said. “Empty the tank. He has been telling us that all week. And that’s what we did tonight.”
