South Grand Prairie downs Haltom, sets up title clash with Arlington Bowie
The South Grand Prairie Warriors stayed undefeated with an easy win against the Haltom Buffalos in their final home game of the season.
The Warriors won 30-6, using several big offensive plays to offset the Buffalos’ game plan to try to keep the ball away from them.
South Grand Prairie came into the game on a roll and playing with a lot of confidence. The Warriors were riding an undefeated 7-0 record, overcoming their toughest test of the season the previous week against Arlington Martin, 34-26, after winning their previous six games easily.
Haltom was 3-5 overall but fighting for a playoff seed with a 3-2 district record. The Buffalos were coming off a 10-point loss the previous week against Arlington Bowie, breaking up a three-game winning streak.
South Grand Prairie did not waste any time. On the Warriors’ first offensive play, they ran a double reverse to Cade Wallace, who took it 61 yards untouched down the right sideline for a touchdown.
Haltom tried to answer by giving a steady dose of runs to running backs Vudrico Roberson and K.J. Parks out of a hybrid wing-type offense. The Buffalos eventually stalled and turned the ball over on downs near midfield.
Despite a hot start, South Grand Prairie’s offense struggled to find a steady rhythm the rest of the quarter. It didn’t stop the Warriors from scoring on another big play, though. Daylon Brooks found Cash Clark wide open up the seam for a 51-yard touchdown pass.
South Grand Prairie led 13-0 heading into the second quarter.
Neither team did much until the final two minutes before halftime. Haltom attempted a 39-yard field goal that came up just short.
The Warriors took over with 1:20 left and looked exclusively to pass the ball. Brooks kept going to his big-play receivers, Wallace and Clark, as the offense started to roll. In the end, Brooks found Wallace on a 5-yard out route for a touchdown with 25 seconds left.
South Grand Prairie wasn’t done, though. On the kickoff, the Buffalos fumbled the ball away, and the Warriors’ Isaiah Adams recovered.
Brooks then found Ryan Goss open down the seam for a 27-yard pass to the 10-yard line. With no timeouts, South Grand Prairie rushed its field goal team on. Dhanni Ortega kicked a 27-yard field goal at the buzzer to go up 23-0 at halftime.
Haltom had its best drive of the game to start the third quarter, chunking off big plays in both the run and pass after settling for shorter gains earlier. The Buffalos were stopped when they fumbled the ball away to the Warriors, recovered by Christopher Ramirez at his team’s 13-yard line.
Both offenses struggled after that until later in the quarter. South Grand Prairie’s Brooks found Wallace behind the defense and hit him in stride for a 60-yard touchdown, fooling the defense with play action. The Warriors led 30-0 heading into the final period.
Both teams put in substitutes and ran the clock down in the fourth quarter. Before that, Haltom was able to avoid the shutout when Dominique Mounivong found tight end Logan Schellinger open for a 21-yard touchdown catch while rolling to his left.
That made the final score 30-6.
Brooks led the Warriors with 259 yards passing and three touchdowns. Wallace led the team with six catches for 144 yards and two touchdowns, and added 61 yards rushing and one touchdown.
Coach Laban DeLay said he was most excited about his team remaining undefeated while sticking to the game plan.
“We knew they wanted to milk the clock, shorten up the game,” DeLay said. “I am very proud of our defense for getting them off the field, getting the ball back to our offense, and they just do what they do — put the ball in the end zone.”
South Grand Prairie improved to 8-0 overall and 6-0 in district play. The Warriors know they have the biggest game of the year coming up next week, traveling to face 7-2, 6-0 Arlington Bowie. It will be a short week, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday.
For Haltom, Roberson led the team with 94 yards rushing, while Parks added 76 on the ground and led the team with two catches for 36 yards. Mounivong threw for 81 yards and one touchdown.
The Buffalos dropped to 3-6 overall and 3-3 in district but are still in contention for a playoff spot heading into the final week. They hope to win their final home game against 1-7 Sam Houston, scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday.
