Former longtime NFL head coach and Barstool media personality Jon Gruden has taken notice of Southlake Carroll football, the No. 1-ranked high school squad in Texas’ highest classification.

In a five-minute monologue, Gruden praised Carroll head coach and executive athletic director Riley Dodge for seizing his 100th career win. He called Dodge, who sent him a box full of Dragon football merchandise, a legend.

Gruden brought up Carroll’s success at the quarterback position, mentioning Dodge, Quinn Ewers and Chase Daniel as former Dragons who thrived in high school and beyond.

Gruden highlighted multiple current Dragons, such as quarterback Angelo Renda, a Pittsburgh pledge and the Star-Telegram Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, and wide receiver Brock Boyd, an Ohio State pledge and the Star-Telegram Preseason Player of the Year.

“This Renda kid, he can spin it, man,” Gruden said. “I saw the highlights.”

Gruden also talked about running back Davis Penn’s return from a season-ending knee injury in the 2024 playoffs, and Memphis pledge Carey Clayton’s leadership within the offense at center. Gruden also spoke about defensive standouts Crawford Taylor, Austin Bussmann and William Chen.

“Lets get back to the championship and win it this year,” Gruden said of Carroll. “You guys keep it going.”

Gruden led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the Super Bowl title in the 2002 season and also coached the Raiders in two stints.
