The Mansfield Tigers had a happy homecoming, beating rival Mansfield Legacy in an overall team effort they needed.

The Tigers won 28-10 and led almost the entire game, but the Broncos had them sweating in the fourth quarter while trying to mount a comeback.

Both teams came into the game with 2-1 district records, tied for second place. Legacy was 4-3 overall and coming off two close district wins against Weatherford and Boswell. Mansfield was 3-4 overall, coming off a solid win against Crowley the previous week.

The Tigers got the ball first and marched down the field, running almost exclusively with running back Raymond Weaver. Thanks to a personal foul penalty that kept the drive alive, Weaver finished it off with a 6-yard run off tackle to give Mansfield an early 7-0 lead.

The Broncos got the ball and handed it to running back J-uan Harrison Jr. nine times on their opening drive. They caught a break when a personal foul penalty on third-and-long extended the possession. Eventually, Legacy stalled, and Jeremiah Kieffer converted a 31-yard field goal to cut the lead to 7-3 heading into the second quarter.

The Tigers’ next drive featured several short to intermediate passes from quarterback Mykah Lankford that moved them down the field. Backup quarterback Alex Luke came in for a change of pace when the offense reached the 10-yard line and kept it on a quarterback sweep. He ran through one defender on his way to the end zone, giving Mansfield a 14-3 lead.

Despite the fast starts, both defenses adjusted in the second quarter. Each team had opportunities to score, moving the ball into opposing territory but coming away empty. Mansfield led 14-3 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Broncos cut the lead to four points. Legacy’s defense held on fourth down at its own 21-yard line to prevent another Tiger score.

The Broncos’ offense then got a boost when their leading receiver, D’Andre Thomas, caught a 12-yard in route before breaking a tackle and sprinting the rest of the way for a 48-yard touchdown. Legacy trailed 14-10 heading into the fourth quarter but had momentum.

On the Broncos’ next drive, they got a 27-yard run from Harrison on fourth-and-short that put them into Tiger territory.

On a run-pass-option play, Legacy opted to throw the slant. It was nearly over Mansfield linebacker Andrew McKinney’s head, but he jumped into the passing lane and returned it 75 yards for a touchdown. The Tigers extended their lead to 21-10.

With 11 minutes left to play, Legacy tried to shake off the turnover, knowing it had to score twice more now. Despite having open receivers on deep routes during the drive on two occasions, the Broncos couldn’t connect and turned the ball over on downs.

The Tigers then looked to run out the clock with Luke and backup running back Knowledge Bluitt. Luke broke loose on a 40-yard run, and on the next play Bluitt ran for 27 yards and a touchdown to put the icing on the cake, extending the lead to 28-10.

Mansfield’s Chime Ojirika intercepted a pass in the end zone in the final two minutes to seal the win.

Weaver had 68 yards rushing and Luke added 67, with both scoring a touchdown to lead the team. Lankford finished with 81 yards passing, with his favorite target being Cole Williams, who had three catches for 38 yards.

Coach Greg George said it was the most complete game his team had played all season. With their district record improving to 3-1, the Tigers are that much closer to achieving the goal George set for the team.

“Our goal since starting district has been to get to four wins,” George said. “Four wins guarantees us a place in the playoffs. With two games to go, we still have to get one of those, but we’ll work to build on what we did tonight.”

Mansfield plays its final home game in two weeks against first-place North Crowley, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. Oct. 30.

For Legacy, Thomas had a standout night with 12 catches for 161 yards and a touchdown. Harrison rushed for 104 yards. Quarterback Jake Jenkins finished with 255 yards passing and one touchdown.

The Broncos’ district record falls to 2-2 heading into the final two games of the season. Legacy is scheduled to host 1-3 Crowley at 7 p.m. Oct. 24.
