The Keller football team came into Pennington Field in a fight for its playoff life on Friday night. Euless Trinity stood in the way.

The Indians jumped out early, but once Trinity got its vaunted running game going the contest turned. The Trojans picked up 585 yards on the ground to run away from Keller 55-37 in a key District 4-6A game.

With the win, Trinity (5-2 overall, 3-2 district) controls its own destiny with Haslet Eaton, Justin Northwest and rival Hurst L.D. Bell left on its schedule. Even if Keller (3-5, 2-4) wins out against Keller Timber Creek and Eaton it might not be enough to play in the post season.

“This game was very important because we needed to bounce back from the past two weeks,” said Trinity running back J.T. Harris, who rushed for 271 yards on 15 carries with four touchdowns. “We got down, but we had to push back through some adversity.”

Keller started quickly with Cash Erdmann returning the opening kickoff 72 yards to the Trinity 21. Five plays later quarterback Brock Burkett hit Bradley McCroskey in the right flat for a two-yard touchdown and a quick 7-0 lead.

Cooper Glaze raced in and blocked a Trojan punt that went out of the end zone for a safety with 5:43 left in the first quarter to give the Indians a 9-0 lead. But Trinity got its running game on track after that.

Following the first of two first-half interceptions by Trinity defensive back Chayce Davis, the Trojans drove 93 yards in eight plays to get on the board. Quarterback Mack Lineweaver found Jaylon Donaldson on a post for a 38-yard score to cut the lead to 9-7 at the 1:40 mark of the opening quarter.

Following a Keller punt, Trinity used six rushing plays to cover 79 yards with Jayden Hollins darting up the middle from 34 yards out to give the Trojans their first lead at 13-9 early in the second period. Keller was able to answer back with another Burkett-to-McCroskey scoring pass, this time of eight yards, for a 15-13 lead with 5:39 left before halftime.

That lead was short lived, however, as Harris, who rushed for 102 yards in the first half, scored on runs of 15 and 57 yards to stretch the lead to 27-15 at the intermission.

“We found our flow with the O-line,” said Harris who scored on runs of 21 and 88 yards in the third quarter to up the lead to 41-23. “Our line coach had to adjust some blocking assignment and our guys started seeking. Those guys up front are everything and without them I’m nothing.”

Burkett was only 13 of 30 passing for 184 yards for Keller due to the Trinity defense being able to put pressure on him. The Trojans defensive line and linebackers had Burkett on the run much of the night.

“They definitely got pressure on the quarterback and that helped me set up the back end and get the picks,” said Davis who got a second interception right before halftime to kill another Keller drive. “We were on the verge of not making the playoffs and I feel that we have to win out, so this game was very important.”

Trinity picked up the 585 rushing yards on 47 attempts. Keondre Dixon (10 rushes-88 yards), Jayden Hollins (8-85) and Marcus Turner (3-76) helped with the onslaught.

Bodie Davis had a nice night receiving for Keller with nine catches for 156 yards.

“They’re so well coached and they came out fighting and swinging just like we knew they would,” said Trinity coach Aaron Lineweaver. “Hats off to Coach (Carl) Stralow over there. They do a great job, but hats off to our kids too for overcoming adversity and staying in there until we got some momentum and we didn’t give it back.”
