‘The kids kept fighting’: Fort Worth Carter-Riverside takes down Southwest
Fort Worth Southwest and Fort Worth Carter-Riverside came into Thursday night’s game at Scarborough-Handley Field looking to get their first win in district play for the season, and the matchup came down to a back-and-forth battle in the fourth quarter.
In the end, it was Carter-Riverside who took home a 42-36 victory.
“The kids just executed and kept fighting; it took all four quarters for us to win this game,” Carter-Riverside head coach David Lara said. “It took every minute, every second to win this game, and the kids just kept fighting and came out on top.”
Carter-Riverside was quick to score when running back DeAndre Fields took a handoff into the end zone with 10:35 remaining in the first quarter. After a strong drive, Southwest turned the ball over on downs.
Fields found the end zone once more with 4:30 remaining in the first quarter, which gave the Eagles a 13-0 lead. Fields would find the end zone a third time at the beginning of the second quarter, giving the Eagles a commanding 19-0 advantage over Southwest.
The Raiders responded with a score of their own with 3:13 remaining in the second quarter, as running back Jeremiah Hogg ran into the end zone. Southwest then successfully converted a two-point conversion, cutting the deficit to 11 points.
Shortly before halftime, Hogg ran it into the end zone for the Raiders with 21 seconds remaining in the second quarter. The score was 19-14 going into the break.
At the beginning of the third quarter, Southwest blocked a punt in the end zone, resulting in a safety, which narrowed the deficit to only three points. Raiders’ quarterback Zachariah Cain then scored a rushing touchdown to give Southwest their first lead of the night, 22-19, with seven minutes remaining in the third quarter.
With 11:14 remaining in the game, Cain scored another touchdown. The Raiders were up 28-19, but the Eagles answered back and brought the game within two points. Southwest led 28-26. With 4:07 remaining in the game, Fields scored another touchdown.
He also got the two-point conversion, and the Eagles led 34-28. Southwest’s Hogg and Cain worked together to put the Raiders up by two. Fields, however, scored his fifth touchdown with less than a minute remaining in the game, sealing the 42-36 win for the Eagles.
“My favorite play was that last touchdown,” Fields said. “Hey, it got us the lead.”
Fields said they will take the energy from this week’s game to work for the rest of the season.
“We are going to get that win no matter what,” Fields said. “It’s a bye week, and we are working all the way through the bye week.”
Both teams will face Eastern Hills next. Southwest will play the Highlanders for their homecoming game next Friday, Oct. 17, at Clark Stadium, and Carter-Riverside will face them Thursday, Oct. 23, at Scarborough-Handley Field.
