What did we learn in Week 6 of Texas high school football in the Fort Worth area?

Here are high school sports editor Charles Baggarly’s main takeaways from the action:

Boswell is on the rise

In a tough 2024 season, Boswell won one game and missed the playoffs by a wide margin. The Pioneers had a young squad with 14 sophomores or freshmen starting.

The 2025 season, with a flurry of experienced returners, has been a much different story. The Pioneers have been competitive and are off to a solid 3-3 start. In their most recent win, they defeated Crowley 28-27 in overtime, making some progress in District 3-6A.

“The guys that played on last year’s team have bought in,” Boswell head coach Wes Weaver said. “They know what it takes — what it takes to win and compete on a Friday night, even though we only went 1-9. They have confidence in the coaches, and the coaches have confidence in them. We just need to build on that trust.”

The Pioneers were coming off a 31-12 loss to Mansfield; Weaver said the game was closer than the score indicated, and felt they were a few plays away from making it a close one.

Boswell needed a gutsy performance against a solid Crowley team to bounce back, and they got it. Weaver said the team’s fight stood out, and that they stayed confident in their ability to compete at a high level in District 3-6A.

“We were down 21-7, and they just never blinked,” Weaver said. “We talked about just being 1-0 every day during practice. Win the day.”

Crowley finished second in district play last season, earning a top playoff spot. There is a long way to go in the regular season, but Boswell’s win over Crowley suggests the Pioneers could compete for a playoff spot.

“It would be huge,” Weaver said of competing in the playoffs. “We are perennially going to be one of the smaller 6A schools in the state. We’re out here on the far reaches of Tarrant County. People kinda forget about us. To be able to compete for a spot in the playoffs, and to get that — it builds your program. You get weeks more of practice and your kids get more experience.

“That’s what the goal is. Every single time that you go into a season. You want to get in the tournament and give yourself a shot.”

Lake Ridge builds momentum

After a one-win season in 2024, Mansfield Lake Ridge stunned the high school football community with three consecutive non-district victories to start the season.

When it mattered more, to start District 3-6A play, the Lake Ridge Eagles continued their strong play, defeating school district rival Mansfield 44-21 on Friday.

Mansfield finished third in 3-6A play last season with a 4-2 record. Although there are lots of games to play, Lake Ridge’s victory is a promising sign that the Eagles can compete for a playoff spot, or even a district championship.

Lake Ridge and North Crowley, both undefeated in 3-6A play, will face off Thursday in a game that could decide the district champion.

Arlington Heights, Wyatt still undefeated in district

After Fort Worth Paschal’s loss to Chisholm Trail, Arlington Heights and Wyatt are the only District 4-5A Division I teams remaining without a district loss.

The race for the district title is about to get interesting.

If Arlington Heights defeats Saginaw on Thursday, it’ll set up a high-stakes clash with Wyatt in Week 8, which could decide the district championship.

For the Yellow Jackets, it will be crucial not to underestimate Saginaw, the 2024 district champion. The Rough Riders’ sole district loss was a hard-fought 21-20 defeat to Wyatt.
