A rivalry matchup between the Western Hills Cougars and Diamond Hill-Jarvis Eagles took place Friday night at Farrington Field — the Cougars led from start to finish en route to a 76-6 victory.

The win broke their three-game losing streak and could be a key element to the rest of their season. The Cougars took home a new record as well, notching the most turnovers in a game in the history of Farrington Field.

They forced 11 turnovers overall, and nine of them came from the Cougar defense.

“Well, it’s a big one for us; we’ve lost two close ones this year, so we need to get out here and just win.” Western Hills head coach Blake Moilan said. “It’s gonna be a big game for us to try and do what we need to do for the rest of the season.”

Right out of the gate, Western Hills wide receiver Justin Hurst hauled in a touchdown, which put the Cougars on the board with 9:18 left in the first quarter. The Cougars took a 6-0 lead. And exactly 10 seconds later, Western Hills athlete Warren Carter returned an interception for a touchdown, giving his team a 14-0 advantage.

Barreling through the first quarter, Western Hills amassed three more touchdowns from De’Anthony Monroe, Mohammed Soumahoro, and Jeremiah Stribling. The Cougars finished the first frame leading 33-0.

It seemed like nothing could stop the Cougars, until a minute into the second quarter. The Eagles put some points of their own on the board. Aiming high for the ball, Zachariah Rios scored the Eagles’ first and only touchdown of the game. The score was 33-6 with 10:48 left in the second quarter.

The Cougars quickly squashed any ideas of a comeback when wide receiver Rodney Hill rushed for a 50-yard touchdown. Western Hills led 41-6 with 9:58 remaining in the second quarter. With 9:06 remaining in the first half. Western Hills demonstrated diversity in scoring by utilizing a variety of plays and players throughout the night to extend the lead. Wide receiver Gabriel Christion tallied a TD to extend the lead to 48-6.

“We had some kids taking snaps for the first time, so, you know, we enjoyed that.” Moilan said, “We had fun with it.”

Wrapping up the first half of the game, Hill scored his second touchdown of the night. This was the first time in the matchup that a player scored twice. The Cougars led 55-6 going into intermission.

Coming out of halftime, Western Hills continued its touchdown pattern, when wide receiver Michael Kincade scored, putting the score at 62-6. The game was quiet on the scoring front for the rest of the third quarter until nearly the last minute of the quarter, when Western Hills O’Rylon Crockett brought the score to 69-6.

Both teams play Decatur next. Western Hills will face the Eagles on Oct. 17 at Decatur, and Diamond Hill-Jarvis will play Decatur on Thursday, Oct. 9, at Clark Stadium.
