Mansfield Timberview made a goal-line stand on the final play to hold on for a 30-23 victory and hand Arlington Seguin its first loss of the season Friday at Anderson Stadium.

The Wolves (4-2, 3-1 District 3-5A Division II), No. 2 in the Star-Telegram’s 5A area rankings, led by three touchdowns in the first half before the No. 6 Cougars (5-1, 3-1) mounted a rally.

“We had times to close them early, but adversity makes you stronger,” Timberview coach Jacody Coleman said. “I’ll take a win any day, no matter the score.”

The first quarter went the home team’s way in almost every aspect. The Wolves scored on three of their four possessions, with three touchdown passes from quarterback Steven Hall, who threw for 118 yards in the quarter.

Two of those went to receiver Braylin Barnett, both in circus fashion. He finished with 92 receiving yards on six catches in the quarter. The second score was especially impressive, as he tipped the ball to himself about five times between two defenders before securing it just before falling out of bounds.

Kobe Gooden caught the other touchdown, a 2-yarder.

The Cougars, meanwhile, managed just one first down in the quarter and trailed 20-0 going into the second.

Seguin’s offense came to life as the first half wound down. Several runs by quarterback Chevy Andrews and big plays from receiver G’Manii Smith set up the Cougars in the red zone. Ka’darrius Trotter capped the drive with a 5-yard score to cut the deficit to 20-7.

Timberview answered quickly, with Hall again finding Barnett for a 16-yard touchdown to make it 27-7.

The Cougars were running out of time with about 30 seconds left before halftime. Seguin dialed up a misdirection trick run, with Johnaven Polk breaking free for a 41-yard touchdown with 22 seconds remaining.

The Wolves went into halftime ahead 27-16.

The third quarter was sloppy on both sides. Timberview recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff, only to give it back on a strip sack by Seguin’s Caryell Brown.

The Wolves’ defense then forced another turnover when Ernesto Chavez recovered a bobbled handoff, but Timberview missed a 32-yard field goal on the ensuing drive.

Seguin cut the lead to one score late in the third, converting a fourth-and-1 with another misdirection handoff to Da’Shaun Marable. He broke free for a 24-yard touchdown run to make it 27-23.

In the fourth quarter, Seguin’s defense forced another turnover when Micah Bolden ripped the ball away from a Wolves player and returned it to midfield.

But Timberview’s defense held, and after a muffed punt return recovered by the Wolves, they converted a 23-yard field goal to stretch their lead to 30-23.

The Cougars got the ball on their own 15-yard line with 1:46 left and one timeout, and a 34-yard pass to Cam Henderson moved Seguin into scoring range.

The Cougars had the ball on the Wolves’ 3-yard line for the final play. They brought in their short-yardage package that had given Timberview trouble on two earlier touchdowns. On this play, though, the quarterback sweep to the right was stood up by the Wolves’ defense near the goal line.

Hall led the Wolves with 234 passing yards and four touchdowns. Barnett finished with seven catches for 108 yards and three scores. On the ground, Davin Hill paced Timberview with 95 yards.

Andrews led Seguin with 143 passing yards. Smith caught five passes for 75 yards, and Trotter rushed for 53 yards and a touchdown.

Timberview next plays Mansfield Summit at 7 p.m. Oct. 10 at Newsom Stadium. Seguin hosts Argyle at 7 p.m. Thursday at Glaspie Field.
