4 Friday night football storylines: Aledo’s district win streak is on the line
Week 6 of the Texas high school football season is here.
Although there are plenty of byes in the Fort Worth area, there are also tons of great storylines to keep an eye on this week:
Can Aledo extend historic district win streak?
Aledo has one of the most impressive accomplishments in all of Texas high school football, or even in the entire nation.
The Bearcats have won a national record 130 consecutive district games. It’s a sign of generational dominance and a standard of greatness that is simply higher than the competition.
The streak, which started in 2007, began before many of the athletes on the current team were born. In his third year as coach of the Bearcats, Robby Jones has carried on the legendary Tim Buchanan’s legacy.
Against Denton Ryan in the regular season last year, the Bearcats trailed 27-8; they stormed back on their home turf to escape with a 42-27 victory and save the streak.
In the playoffs, the matchup that mattered most, Ryan got the upper hand, seizing a 31-21 win over Aledo, the defending Class 5A Division I state champion. Ryan was eliminated by Highland Park in the state semifinals.
Now, the rivalry continues on Ryan’s home field. Aledo (5-0, 3-0 District 3-5A Division I) will face Denton Ryan (4-0, 2-0) at 7 p.m. Friday at the Collins Complex.
Ahead of the season, Jones said the team doesn’t necessarily discuss the historic strength at length. The Bearcats do, however, discuss what it takes to win week by week. Ultimately, consistently winning in the short term has enabled the Bearcats to stack victories for decades.
Should Aledo be worried? If anyone has the firepower to snap the streak, it’s Denton Ryan or Richland. Through five weeks, however, the Bearcats looked improved and the favorite to win the 5A Division I state title, while Ryan has struggled against Mansfield Timberview and Eaton.
Can L.D. Bell continue its magic?
L.D. Bell has one of the best stories in Texas high school football in this season.
At every turn, the Blue Raiders have found a way to win in the game’s most pivotal moments. And in District 4-6A, every win is vital to a potential playoff appearance. Bell hasn’t been to the postseason since 2013.
Now, the Blue Raiders (5-0, 3-0) face Northwest (1-3, 0-2) at 7 p.m. Friday at Pennington Field. The Texans are 0-2 in District 4-6A play but are certainly capable of bouncing back. That makes them dangerous.
Northwest’s two district losses were incredibly close. The Texans lost 34-28 to Keller in overtime and 31-30 to Eaton. Meanwhile, Bell beat Keller with a walk-off field goal and took down Eaton in double overtime.
Bell has another tough challenge on its hands, but if the last couple of games have taught us anything about the Blue Raiders, its that they have what it takes to come out on top in a close game.
Can Seguin stay undefeated?
Arlington Seguin (5-0, 3-0 District 3-5A Division II) has had a stellar start to the year. In 2024, however, the Cougars had a similar stretch.
Then, once they faced more challenging district competition, the success couldn’t be maintained.
Seguin will face Mansfield Timberview (3-2, 2-1) at 7 p.m. Friday at Anderson Stadium. In the following weeks, the Cougars will face Argyle and Colleyville Heritage.
The Wolves will be a sizable test for Seguin and its high-powered offense. Timberview’s defense is one of the best in the area, and it was able to contain squads like Denton Ryan.
Argyle nearly fell to Timberview, and Colleyville Heritage was bested by the Wolves in a 43-42 thriller.
Can Paschal stay undefeated?
Fort Worth Paschal has had a stellar start to the 2025 season, and in Week 6, will face its toughest challenge yet.
Paschal (4-0, 2-0 District 4-5A Division I) will hit the road to face Chisholm Trail (2-3, 1-2) at 7:30 p.m. Friday. If the Panthers can take down the Rangers, they’ll be in a great position to compete for the district championship with Arlington Heights and Wyatt.
If Paschal and Heights can stay undefeated, which is a likely scenario, an extremely high stakes Battle of the Bonfire rivalry game to end the regular season could come to fruition.
