In the away locker room at Farrington Field, House of Pain’s “Jump Around” blasted from the speakers.

The Eagle Mountain Knights threw a mini dance party after a victory in a non-district UIL high school football game on Friday. Powered by five interceptions, they defeated Fort Worth Benbrook 46-15 to improve to 4-1 on the year.

“We’re super proud of our defensive guys,” Eagle Mountain head coach Jeremy Mullins said. “And that defensive staff. Weston Bond does a great job with those guys. They had some opportunities and took advantage of them.”

In the 2024 matchup, in Eagle Mountain’s inaugural season, Benbrook won 28-24. After not having seniors last year, the Knights returned a lot of players with experience.

“It always helps to have a lot of guys coming back,” Mullins said. “ ... Football and skill wise, we’ve grown in one year. And certainly, some maturity. Some things we definitely have got to clean up and be better at. But we’re excited about where we’re going.”

Benbrook (2-3) started the game strong with a fumble recovery from Will Cook , which set up a 21-yard reception from receiver Waylin Barton. Quarterback Brennan Barton capitalized with a one yard rushing score.

With 2:26 left in the first quarter, the Knight defense started a spectacular run of takeaways. Bryson Ivy, Matthew Neil, Mamoud Hussein, and Kathen Middleton notched first-half interceptions — Hussein’s was a pick-six off the hand of sophomore QB Jaxyn Donart; Barton threw the other three interceptions.

The offense was able to capitalize on the extra possessions. QB Brycen Vindiola gave his team the lead, leaping over a defender and breaking a tackle for an eight-yard score.

After Hussein’s interception, running back Terry Starks and Justin Fox padded the lead with 25 and two-yard TD rushes, respectively; the Knights took a 32-8 lead into halftime.

The takeaway party continued with an interception from Tyler Self, which was returned 44 yards for a touchdown. RB La’Darius Williams notched the Knights’ final score, a breakaway 40-yard run, to give his team a 46-8 advantage.

Facing an insurmountable lead, Benbrook added a fourth quarter score, a 13 yard rush from Quentin Thomas.

Starks led the Knight offense with 133 yards and a score on 16 attempts.

“Terry is a great kid,” Mullins said. “He works tremendously hard. He is a guy that you like to root for.”

Both Benbrook and Eagle Mountain have byes in Week 5, but after that, they’ll start district play. Benbrook will face Dunbar at Clark Stadium at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 10, and Eagle Mountain will be tested in a home game against Brock at 7 p.m. on the same day.

“I expect us to go out every Friday and compete with the potential to win,” Mullins said. “And just take that one week at a time. And then by the end of it, we’ll look up and see where we are.”
