Junior placekicker Carlos Carmona drilled a 26-yard field goal with four seconds remaining as the Mansfield Timberview Wolves overcame a 22-point four-quarter deficit, scoring 23 unanswered in a wild 43-42 victory over the Colleyville Heritage Panthers Friday September 19th in a district 3-5A Division II matchup at Vernon Newsom Stadium.

“So many emotions in getting ready for the kick,” said Carmona. “I was excited, nervous. Everything was perfect. Snap was clean, hold was great, and I just focused on kicking it. I had the confidence I could make it.”

Timberview was in a position to rally with an incredible sequence of plays in the fourth quarter, from its defense, special teams, and the play of a backup quarterback who entered in the final period. Colleyville Heritage had taken a 42-20 lead with 11:54 left in the fourth quarter after Bodey Weaver connected with Trevi Preische on a 29-yard TD strike.

Timberview’s Davin Hill returned the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for Timberview to start the rally.

“Best player in the state,” a jubilant Timberview head coach Jacody Coleman said of Hill. “His kickoff return and his punt returns during the game were huge for us.”

“Anytime Davin Hill touches the ball, he is a threat to go all the way,” Coleman added. “He puts in excellent field position throughout the game with his punt returns and kickoff returns.”

Hill said he just got “great blocking” on his kickoff TD return, and he just streaked for the goal line.

“There were some good openings all night,” said Hill. “I just took advantage of them.”

After Hill’s kickoff TD return, Timberview junior linebacker Truistan Douglas took over. Douglas had a 21-yard fumble return TD, and on a later Heritage offensive possession, cut in front of a receiver and raced 27 yards for an interception return score that brought the Wolves to within two, 42-40 with 4:23 left in the game.

“I was just in the right spot,” said Douglas. “On the fumble, I saw it come loose and just picked it up and got clear to the end zone. I read the route on the interception and was able to make a big play there.”

Timberview fumbled the snap on the two-point conversion attempt, leaving the Wolves with a two-point deficit. Timberview forced Heritage to punt on its next series. Getting the ball back at the Heritage 41-yard line, thanks to a 26-yard Hill punt return, Timberview had no timeouts left and 2:04 on the clock.

Backup quarterback Steven Hall, a sophomore, had entered the game in the fourth quarter, and starting quarterback Mylez Davis had three third-quarter interceptions. Hall completed four of six passes on the winning drive, setting up a fourth and two at the Heritage nine-yard line.

And Carmona came on to nail the winning kick.

“Coach just said to be ready,” said Hall. “And I was. I just kept calm and let the guys make plays. Just an incredible win.”

Coach Coleman said he told his team at halftime, “not to quit”. And he kept repeating that to his team in the second half.

“Never give up,” Coleman said. “Never give up. That is our mantra. And we did that in a big way tonight.” Coleman praised Hall for being ready to come into the game in the final period.

“Mylez struggled some there in the third period, and I just felt Steven Hall deserved a shot,” said Coleman. “And he came through big time for us.”

For Timberview, Hall finished eight of 14 in passing for 91 yards, all in the final period. Starting quarterback Davis was 15 of 28 for 280 passing yards and three touchdowns -- a 25-yarder to Loyce Grayes that staked Timberview to an early 6-0 advantage in the first quarter, and TD tosses of 22 and 80 yards to Braylin Barnett, the latter midway through the third quarter.

Barnett finished with a game-high 172 receiving yards on nine catches, while Chance Collins -- a Texas A&M pledge, added six receptions for 85 yards. Quarterback Bodey Weaver accounted for all six Colleyville Heritage touchdowns, tallying three rushing and three passing touchdowns.

Weaver recorded 235 passing yards (15 of 27 with two interceptions) and added a game-leading 127 rushing yards on 12 carries. A UTEP pledge, Weaver had TD runs of 23, four and 26 yards in the first half.

His aerial scores were 26 yards to Landon Dressell early in the second period, a third-quarter 15-yard TD to Lucas Sunwall, and the 29-yarder to Priesche on the first play of the final stanza, which was the last time the Panthers would score.

Weaver’s 26-yard TD run came with nine ticks left before halftime and gave Heritage a 28-13 advantage at intermission. Dressell had four catches for 72 yards, while Priesche chipped in with three grabs for 72 yards for the Panthers.

Mansfield Timberview (2-2, 1-1 District 3-5A DII) has a road contest at league opponent Everman next Friday night with a scheduled 7 p.m. kickoff.

Colleyville Heritage (2-2, 1-1 District 3-5A DII) will host district foe Argyle next Friday night, Sept. 26, with a 7 p.m. kickoff at Pennington Field.
