Justin Northwest track prodigy Cooper Lutkenhaus defied the odds making it to the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

His trip to the prestigious event, however, will end after the first round. Lutkenhaus recorded a seventh-place finish in his 800-meter heat with a 1:47.68 mark. He became the youngest American to compete in the World Championships.

Lutkenhaus told Citius Mag that it was a tough performance but that it was a learning experience against the best in the world.

“It’s not your day every time,” Lutkenhaus said. “Anybody can tell you that. ... In school, you fail a math test occasionally. But you come back. ... And I’m excited for what the future holds.”

Lutkenhaus said he was in the best shape, but that his late race kick just wasn’t there. He started in the back of the pack and couldn’t make up the ground in time.

To qualify for Worlds, Lutkenhaus stunned the track world with a 1:42.27 time and a second-place finish at the U.S. track championships, breaking the under-18 world record. At worlds, he needed a top-three finish in his heat to automatically advance.

His Team USA teammates Donavan Brazier and Bryce Hoppel advanced to the world semifinals with first- and second-place finishes, respectively, in their heats.

Tuesday’s race was Lutkenhaus’ first as a Nike athlete. He signed on Aug. 25, forgoing high school and collegiate eligibility.
