Colleyville Heritage offense explodes for 73 points in victory over The Colony
After a slow start in the first, Colleyville Heritage hit the gas, and never looked back. The Panthers managed to dominate the Cougars, 73-7, at Mustang-Panther stadium on Friday.
From start to finish, Colleyville seemed to smother The Colony, on both sides of the ball. The defense would hold the Cougars to 146 yards on offense, meanwhile managing to accrue 489 total yards of their own.
In fact, it was so dominating, Colleyville Heritage managed to score on every drive of the game, aside from two. Those two drives being the second drive of the game, a turnover on downs, and the last drive of the game, where they ran out the clock.
“I was really proud of the kids after last week,” Heritage head coach Jerry Edwards said. “To come out and execute to a high level and be as efficient as we were, I thought the defense did a good job of getting us great field position all night, and then our offense took advantage of it.”
Senior quarterback Bodey Weaver had himself quite a night, as he finished with 232 passing yards, 77 rushing yards, and 6 total touchdowns. The UTEP-commit looked poised, professional, and in control at all times.
“It felt great,” Weaver said. “Our offensive was clicking. We never scored more than 40 last year, so when you do this at home, it feels great.”
His best play of the night, may have been late in the third quarter, when Weaver would fake spin past a defender, only to find his receiver Trevi Preische in the back of the endzone.
If you were to ask him though, he may think differently.
“That spin move was great,” Weaver said. “I felt the defensive end was committed to one spot, and I knew I could get him, but my favorite play was that roll-out post, rolling to the right – throwing back left. That’s a tough throw.”
In a game where Colleyville Heritage couldn’t stop scoring, The Colony didn’t manage to put up any points of their own until 2:54 left in the 3rd quarter. After being down 52-0, Tulsa-commit Xavier Green hauled in a 26-yard touchdown catch, to cap off a 61-yard night for the senior.
Heritage came roaring back with a score of their own. As time expired in the 3rd quarter, Joseph Nisbet intercepted Jaylen Gaines, and ran it back for six. Solidifying an already outstanding performance for the Panthers.
“We’re clicking,” Edwards said. “That’s what we need to do. We’ve got a tough opponent coming up next week. In our district, every week is tough. So to come out and win like that, and win that convincingly, it builds a lot of confidence in our team.”
Next week, Colleyville Heritage hits the road to take on Mansfield Timberview High School on Friday, Sept. 19th, at 7 p.m.
“We have a lot higher expectations, which starts every day in practice,” Weaver added. “We’re elite offensively, which I think was our biggest struggle last season, but this year we’re coming different. I think we made a statement about that tonight.”.
