Friday night’s matchup between the Dunbar Wildcats and the O.D. Wyatt Chaparrals at Clark Stadium was an exciting, back-and-forth fight until lightning brought the game to an abrupt ending.

With Wyatt leading Dunbar 21-20, both teams went in for halftime, but never came back out to play due to the lightning in the area. Since the game reached the break, Wyatt receives the victory, FWISD Athletics confirmed to the Star-Telegram.

Dunbar and Wyatt have a historic rivalry, with last season ending with the Wildcats beating the Chaparrals 14-13. This season, the Wildcats, starting with a 1-0 record, set the stage for the intense rivalry.

O.D. Wyatt head coach Zachary Criss has allegiances to both sides of the field. He is the Wyatt head coach as well as a Dunbar alum.

“The game means a lot, there’s a lot of tradition on both sides,” Criss said. “So my heart is on one side, but on the other hand, it’s on the other, too.”

Dunbar was the first to score early in the night when running back Kamron Lloyd rushed for 75 yards, scoring a touchdown just 10 seconds into the first quarter. Minutes later, the Wyatt Chaparrals clapped back with a running touchdown of their own by Dale Brown.

As the football players had their battle on the field, the rival bands had one of their own. With music blasting throughout the stadium, you could feel the school pride emitting from both sides of the stands as they competed to one-up each other.

The game continued to be close after Wyatt’s Mar’kavion Toombs took it to the house in a rushing touchdown. The score was 14-7 with just over one minute remaining in the first quarter.

Dunbar’s D’Tyree Faulk ran it in for the next touchdown of the night. The game was tied with 9:07 left in the second quarter. Quarterback Kentrell Steward took it into the endzone for Wyatt with 7:03 left in the second quarter.

Their extra point attempt was good, and Wyatt led this rivalry matchup 21-14. Dunbar’s Detrick James with the carry was able to score a touchdown for his team with 1:04 remaining in the first half. It was the final score of the game.

The extra point attempt went under the goal post and was no good.

The Wildcats will face Wichita Falls Memorial on Friday, September 12, for a non-conference game at The Memorial. The Chaparrals will face the Chisholm Trail Rangers on Thursday, September 11, at Clark Stadium.
