Fort Worth All Saints’ duel against Plano Prestonwood called due to weather
As the sun set, the lights turned bright, and we had ourselves a ball game at Lions Stadium for the second official week of Texas high school football. The Reigning TAPPS Division II champions, All Saints (Fort Worth) and perennial powerhouse Prestonwood Christian Academy, faced off in a highly-anticipated matchup.
Unfortunately, though, just as this game was getting started, the game was called at halftime due to inclement weather, with All Saints leading 28-21 through two quarters.
Whether All Saints will receive the win is to be determined, according to coach Aaron Beck.
The Saints would get out to a hot start with their first two drives ending in a touchdown. The first of which by Gavin Beard, was a result of back-to-back 10-yard runs. Beard would finish on the ground with 3 rushes for 20 yards and a single score.
After a Prestonwood turnover on downs, the Saints quickly extended their lead to fourteen after Bourke Toler punched it in for his first score of the game. Toler finished his night with 5 rushes for 24 yards and one touchdown.
On their next possession, Prestonwood would manage to find the back of the endzone and cut the lead to 7. However, on the ensuing kick-off Sophomore Jaytn Briles returned a 85-yard touchdown to regain the Saints 14-point lead.
A lead that was subsequently extended after a fancy double-reverse flea flicker that ended with a 46-yard touchdown pass to Senior Hattan French. Through one half, Gavin Beard was 13 of 16 through the air, accruing 195 passing yards and a touchdown. French had himself a night, accounting for 94 of those yards, along with the lone touchdown reception.
Things would eventually settle down for Prestonwood as quarterback Luke Glass began to find his rhythm. After starting 1 for 4, with five yards through the air. Glass would finish 10 for 18 with 128 yards and 3 TDs. A rough start for the senior QB eventually morphed into multiple methodical drives that cut down the All Saints’ lead to 7 and extinguished any sort of momentum for the away team.
In some respects, it felt as if this heavyweight fight was stopped too soon, with storms rolling in from the west.
Next week, All Saints welcome Richland High School (Prosper, TX) to McNair Stadium on Friday, September 12th at 7pm.
