Week 2 of the Texas high school football season is here.

Here are five of the top Fort Worth-area football storylines for Friday’s games:

North Crowley, DeSoto to clash

Last season, North Crowley put Texas high school football on notice when it took down DeSoto. One year later, the Panthers enter the matchup as the reigning Class 6A Division I state champions.

North Crowley (1-0) will host DeSoto (0-1) at 7 p.m. Friday at Crowley ISD Stadium.

Both teams had rocky starts to the season, by their standards. North Crowley trailed Lancaster in the fourth quarter but made plays when it mattered to avoid the upset and win 22-18.

DeSoto’s Week 1 was even more turbulent. The Eagles were thrashed 70-28 by Creekside, a Georgia program that the Eagles beat 70-0 last season.

Non-district play is a time for all programs to test themselves, learn and grow in games that don’t have playoff implications. At the same time, Week 2 will provide a closer look at championship programs as they aim to solidify themselves as top contenders in their respective classifications.

A test for Southlake Carroll

Southlake Carroll started its season strong with a dominant 49-0 shutout of Midland.

Now, the Dragons (1-0) will face a familiar foe in Hebron. Southlake Carroll will host the Hawks at 7 p.m. Friday at Dragon Stadium.

Carroll defeated Hebron 59-16 in Week 2 last season. The programs rematched in the regional semifinals, and the game was a whole lot closer. The Dragons, riddled with injuries, defeated the Hawks 42-37 in a hard-fought classic en route to a 6A Division I state championship appearance.

It’s safe to say that Hebron (1-0) will have plenty of motivation entering this year’s contest, but the Hawks have a hefty task ahead against the No. 1-ranked 6A program in Texas.

All Saints looks to topple Prestonwood

Fort Worth All Saints had a very impressive Week 1 win, taking down Dallas Parish Episcopal.

Now, the stakes get higher and the challenge gets tougher. All Saints (1-0), the No. 2-ranked private school in the state, according to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, will hit the road to face No. 1 Plano Prestonwood Christian (0-0) at 7 p.m. Friday.

The Saints are a TAPPS Division II squad, while Prestonwood plays in Division I.

If All Saints can secure this victory, the program will take down another roadblock to consecutive undefeated state championship seasons.

Class 5A area powers to clash

Colleyville Heritage had a slower Week 1 performance, falling to Red Oak 20-11.

The Panthers, ranked No. 4 in 5A in the Fort Worth area by the Star-Telegram, have a huge opportunity to bounce back against a talented Richland squad. The Royals won last year’s matchup 43-23 and are looking to start the season 2-0 after a season-opening win over Haltom.

Richland (1-0) will face Colleyville Heritage (0-1) at 7 p.m. Friday at Mustang-Panther Stadium.

Aledo looks to build momentum

Aledo had a strong Week 1 performance, seizing 21-14 victory over 6A power Denton Guyer.

Now, the Bearcats have another 6A program on deck: Lancaster. Aledo will hit the road to face the Tigers at 7 p.m. Friday.

Aledo defeated Lancaster 37-27 last season. However, this year’s game could be a closer, given that the Tigers (0-1) nearly took down North Crowley, the reigning Class 6A Division I state champion.

It’ll be another big test for the Bearcats (1-0), a program looking to prove it’s the top contender for the 5A Division I state championship. For Lancaster, its another chance to prove itself against a top program.
