Fort Worth Diamond Hill-Jarvis football snaps 47-game losing streak to start 1-0
With new head coach Irwin Garcia and high hopes for the year, the Fort Worth Diamond Hill-Jarvis Eagles delivered a massive 26-14 win over Fort Worth South Hills.
The victory snapped a 47-game losing streak, the longest in Texas. It had been more than 2,000 days since DHJ secured a win. On Thursday, Aug. 28, at Scarborough Handley Field, the team got a fresh start.
“It’s going to be a foundation builder for us to see if we are moving in the right direction,” Garcia said. “So ultimately, we want to go out there and compete and play with a lot of effort, and for our players, it is going to show us where we are at right now.”
For the Scorpions, the win against Diamond Hill-Jarvis in 2024 was their only win of the season. This time, DHJ got the upper hand. The Eagles’ motto for the 2025 season is eyes up; keep climbing.
“Our number one goal for the program this year is to bring back some of the pride to Diamond Hill that it used to have in the early and late 90s,” Garcia said.
Diamond Hill-Jarvis snaps the streak
After an hour of lightning delays, Fort Worth Diamond Hill-Jarvis and Fort Worth South Hills were finally able to start their seasons.
The first quarter was full of struggles for both teams — both had fumbles and turnovers to start the game. The first touchdown of the night was a three-yard run by South Hills quarterback JP Martinez, who scored with 8:28 left on the clock in the second quarter.
The Scorpions were up 7-0. The second quarter saw the temperatures drop and the players’ tempers rise. DHJ had a player ejected from the game. Eagles’ quarterback, Elijah Hernandez, was injured after being pushed, but he was able to get back in the game and run for a touchdown with 1:51 left before halftime, tying the game 7-7.
The Scorpions clapped back quickly with a handoff from David Munoz to Jose Macias for a running touchdown that was over 80 yards. The score was 14-7 at intermission.
“When we went into the half, we went in and we were down, and so we made some adjustments and we played with a lot of pride and a lot of fight,” Garcia said. “Our kids only know one thing now, and that’s to play hard, and ultimately it ended up going our way.”
Then, Diamond Hill tied it early in the third quarter with a pass from Hernandez to Isaiah Lewis. Just minutes later, Hernandez had a touchdown pass to Aaron Chavez, which gave them the 20-14 lead.
The Eagles wanted to ensure this lead did not slip away. In the top of the fourth quarter, Hernandez ran into the end zone for another touchdown, giving DHJ a 26-14 lead. This was the final score of the night.
“We have been putting in that work for four years,” Hernandez said. “We’ve never got that win. It felt really amazing that we were able to do that tonight. It means everything to me.”
Diamond Hill hopes to start a winning streak this season when they take on Northside High School in the Battle of the Boots at Farrington Field on Friday, September 5.
“It’s not the end because we’ve always had a dream of being the foundation for this Diamond Hill team, and I think this is a good start,” Chavez said.
South Hills head coach Mika Harp said it was not the outcome his team wanted, but they still have nine more games to play.
“We are going to get back to work tomorrow, we will show up on Monday, and we will go back to the drawing board and see what we will come up with,” Harp said.
South Hills will get to show off what they come up with when they play River Oaks Castleberry, Friday, September 5, at Scarborough Handley Field.
