Grandview softball defeats Whitesboro, claims program’s first state championship
For the first time in school history, the Grandview Zebras won a UIL softball state title.
Grandview (34-3) secured an 9-3 victory over Whitesboro (26-12) on Thursday, May 29, at Red & Charline McCombs Field in the Class 3A Division I state championship.
The Zebras, who lost in the 2024 Class 3A state championship, seized redemption with the program-defining victory.
Grandview was effective from the start, adding two runs in the first frame via a home run from Sydney Mann. The Zebras went scoreless until the fifth inning, when they broke open the game with five runs.
That scoring spree started with an error from the Whitesboro infield, and pitcher Avery Howerton soon lost control. She hit a batter and walked another, which plated another run. Howerton bounced back with consecutive outs but couldn’t put away Jaley James, who cleared the bases with a double.
Grandview’s Aubree Nalley and Kat Gordy provided some insurance in the sixth inning. Nalley posted an RBI single up the middle, and Gordy got an RBI on a groundout.
Paving the way to victory was pitcher Madi Doty, a Texas pledge. She played on the field she is committed to playing on in the future of her athletic career with the Longhorns. In the present, she delivered Grandview a state championship with a stellar performance.
Doty tallied two singles on offense. From the circle, she conceded four hits and allowed two earned runs. She recorded 11 strikeouts and walked zero batters.
