Regional semifinal baseball roundup: Byron Nelson, Southlake Carroll win, more
The UIL Texas high school baseball regional semifinals are underway.
Here are the things to know from Fort Worth-area teams.
Byron Nelson takes game one from Flower Mound Marcus
The stands were overflowing for game one of a Class 6A Division II regional semifinal between Byron Nelson and No. 5 Flower Mound Marcus (26-10).
Blaring horns, rattling sound makers and nonstop cheers filled the stadium as Byron Nelson (25-10-1) powered to a 4-2 victory on Thursday, May 15 at Byron Nelson High School.
The Bobcats took the lead in the first inning with consecutive hits and a deep sacrifice fly to center field from Colton Smith. One of those hits came from starting pitcher Kenson Buth, who kept the Marauders scoreless for the first two frames.
“I love that kid,” Smith said of Buth. “He just competes. He has the most pop I’ve ever seen for his size. And that kid is just hilarious, he makes me smile.”
Marcus scored in the third after a defensive miscommunication — Buth tried a pickoff move to second base, but no one was covering. That advanced the runners, which allowed Marcus’ Easton Mitchell to bring home a run with a ground out.
Buth, with consistent changeups to lefthanders and inside fastballs to right-handers, allowed three hits and finished his outing with six strikeouts and one earned run through five innings. Offensively, Buth had a team-high two hits.
In the bottom half of the fifth, the Bobcats took the lead on a misplayed grounder to short from Smith, who notched his second RBI. Smith said he felt comfortable with the pressure tonight because he had been in the same situation before.
“I think about it as just another game,” Smith said. “That’s all it is. Just like I’m a little kid again playing wiffle ball.”
Next, Aiden Saraceno hit an easy two-out pop-up — It was dropped, and the Bobcats took a 4-1 lead.
Marcus added a run in the seventh, but Byron Nelson’s Ashton Elder slammed the door shut. On Friday, Byron Nelson, the fourth-place finisher in District 4-6A, can take the series.
“We need to keep giving full effort,” Buth said. “We need to keep playing the same way. Keep hitting the ball, pitching and playing good defense.”
Southlake Carroll holds off Denton Guyer
Southlake Carroll got a stellar performance from pitcher Jack Fuller and a key hit from freshman Cam Dean as the Dragons took Game 1 of their Class 6A Division 2 regional semifinal series 4-2 over Denton Guyer on Thursday, May 15, at Dragon Field.
Carroll (29-7-1), ranked No. 2 in the latest Class 6A state poll put out by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association, will try to sweep the series against Guyer (22-14) when the teams meet for Game 2 at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 16, at Guyer High School.
Game 3, if necessary, is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, at Dallas Baptist University.
Fuller allowed just two hits that came in the form of back-to-back doubles by Isaac Calderon and Jacob Pruett in the fourth inning that cut Carroll’s lead to 3-1. Fuller gave up two runs, one earned, and walked four and struck out seven in six innings of work.
Davis Perkins came on to pitch the seventh inning for the Dragons and struck out the side.
Perkins scored on an error in the bottom of the second after getting hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. The Dragons loaded the bases with two outs for Dean who lined a single to right to drive home two to give Carroll a 3-0 lead.
The Dragons added an insurance run in the fifth when Tanner Carson led off with a ringing triple to the wall in left center and came home on a one-out single to left-center by Perkins.
Mansfield Legacy edges Prosper for series lead
Mansfield Legacy scratched for single runs in the first and fifth innings and pitcher Jake Jenkins made it hold up as the Broncos blanked Prosper 2-0 in Game 1 of their Class 6A Division 1 regional semifinal series on Thursday, May 15.
Game 2 of the series, being played at Kelly Field in Carrollton, is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, May 16.
Jenkins tossed 6.2 innings for Legacy (24-9) scattering five hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Lewis Wilkerson came on to get the final out for the Broncos, striking out the only hitter he faced.
Owen Skinner walked to lead off the game for Legacy and moved to second on a one-out walk to Jayden Lewis. Saxton Turnbough was hit by a pitch moving up both runners and Blaine Rusch drove in Skinner with a sacrifice fly to left.
The Broncos added another run in the fifth when Cole Potestio led off with a walk and later scored when Lewis double to left. Lewis had two of Legacy’s four hits in the game going 2-for-2 with a walk.
Prosper (28-8-1), No. 10 in the state in the THSBCA Class 6A poll, loaded the bases in the seventh with two outs, but Wilkerson’s strikeout ended the game.
Keller shuts out Hebron, takes first game
Keller (30-8) had stellar pitching in game one of a Class 6A Division I regional semifinal at Coppell Baseball Complex.
It allowed the Indians to shut out Hebron (20-16) and capture a 2-0 victory. Starting pitcher Nate Quickstand paved the way, allowing zero earned runs and three hits through 5 1/3 innings pitched. He struck out seven.
Relief pitcher Logan Brown took over in the bottom of the sixth and was perfect the rest of the way, allowing zero hits, zero walks, and striking out one.
Offensively, leadoff hitter and shortstop Cole Koeninger, a Tennessee commit, led the way, tallying a team-high two hits and two runs. The winner of Keller and Hebron’s series will face either Mansfield Legacy or Prosper in the Region One final.
Aledo walks off Amarillo in thrilling Game 1
Aledo scored three times in the bottom of the seventh after Amarillo had scored twice in the top of the inning to walk off with a 3-2 win over the Sandies in Game 1 of their Class 5A Division 1 regional semifinal on Thursday, May 15, at Iowa Park High School.
Aledo (28-7), No. 6 in the state in Class 5A according to the THSBCA, will try to sweep Amarillo (24-12-1) in Game 2 scheduled for 1 p.m. on Friday, May 16, with Game 3 following, if necessary, back at Iowa Park HS.
The game was scoreless until Amarillo scored twice in the top of the seventh, but Aledo didn’t flinch. The Bearcats loaded the bases on a double by Brennon Evans, a one-out walk to Luke Gladchuk and an infield single by Blake Burdine.
Wilson Sehnem, who was running for Evans, scored on a ground out to first by Landon Barnes to cut the lead to 2-1. Lucas Nawrocki followed with a sharp single to center scoring Burdine and Gladchuk, who slid in just under the tag at home plate.
Grayson McKelvey was stellar on the mound for Aledo tossing six innings of no-hit ball walking one and striking out nine.
