Fort Worth Arlington Heights’ Justin Stewart thrives in sprint events

Fort Worth Arlington Heights junior Justin Stewart added to a prestigious track and field legacy. Both of his parents competed in the Olympics for Jamaica, and the talent runs in the family.

Stewart won the boys Class 5A 100-meter state championship with a time of 10.30 seconds, edging out the runner-up, Lubbock Coronado’s Allen Grant, by 0.01 seconds.

In the 200-meter, he came in second place, finishing with a time of 20.84. Frisco Lone Star junior Davian Groce, the winner, finished at 20.52, which was 0.32 seconds ahead of Stewart. Groce is a 247Sports four-star rated running back with offers from TCU, Texas A&M, Oklahoma Michigan, Notre Dame and more.

Although he won the gold in the 100-meter, Stewart said the 200-meter is his preferred race.

“I get to show my top-end speed,” Stewart said.

Arlington Martin’s Caitlyn Cavitt wins long jump title, more

Arlington Martin junior Caitlyn Cavitt had a lot to balance at the UIL State Track and Field Meet at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

She participated in four events in Class 6A: The long jump, 100-meter dash, 4x100 relay and the 4x200 relay.

And she didn’t just participate in each — she thrived.

In the long jump, Cavitt was the only athlete to break the 20-foot mark with a wind-aided jump of 20-1.75 that secured an individual state championship. The runner-up, Cate Bryant of Houston Memorial, set a 19-6.75 mark.

In the individual 100-meter, Cavitt tallied a time of 11.47, finishing fifth.

In the 4 x 100, Cavitt and teammates Ciara Brown, Gennieve Davis and Zariah Berry took seventh place with a time of 45.41. The Warriors, with the same team, finished sixth in the 4 x 200 with a time of 1:38.61.

Euless Trinity’s Caleb Adom wins 6A triple jump championship

Entering his sixth and final attempt in the Class 6A boys’ triple jump, Euless Trinity junior Caleb Adom needed a sizable improvement.

His opposition hovered around the 48-foot mark, and Adom hadn’t gotten to that level. But in his final jump, Adom surpassed that bar with room to spare, landing at 49-11.00 to win the state championship.

The runner-up, Damerian Clerkley of Manvel, recorded a distance of 48-9.75.

Aledo’s Molly Garrison takes third in 5A girls’ 1600

In the girls’ CLass 5A 1600 meter race, Aledo’s Molly Garrison trailed the leaders for the first two laps.

But in the third, she turned on the gas, moving from seventh to fourth. In the final lap, she found another gear, overtaking the third-place competitor and joining the leaders for an extremely tight finish. She finished in third place with a time of 4:51.93.

The winner, Lubbock’s Reese Pena, finished in 4:51.26, and the runner-up, Dana Rojas Vazquez, finished at the same exact time. Garrison was 0.67 seconds behind. She had the momentum, but not the positioning.

Denton Ryan’s Kailyn Head dominates 5A girls’ hurdle events

Denton Ryan’s Kailyn Head will leave the UIL State track and field meet with two gold medals. She thrived in the Class 5A 300 and 100-meter hurdles, winning both events.
